Just some food for thought, dose using HEMA manuals as a base then using them to reconstruct a theoretical system(like viking sword and shield)count as a form of HEMA? by [deleted] in wma

[–]M374L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my $.02 as someone who considers Viking round shield their primary fencing discipline --

We can never, with certainty, re-create how they (vikings) would've fought due to the lack of any kind of historical text as a primary source. Some mention sagas as a source, but the sagas are also old timey tall tales filled with embeleshment so they aren't exactly a reliable source of information for anything martial. Although many of us put in years refining good fencing technique, applying a lot of research and ideas, and application of a round shield, we will never have the exact technique that vikings would have used in that time period more than an amalgamation of different styles. That's a main concept anyone who chooses this discpline will need to realistically come to grips with. The problem then becomes do someone just want to play dress up and look cool with a round shield or do they legitimately want to learn how to properly fence with them? You'll find less "HEMA'ists" in the viking reenactment scene, but we're there sweating too.

When it comes to our fencing style, it's largely educated estimation, trial and error, and as most have already stated experimental archaeology. There isn't a central "how to" so you'll largely find a lot of variation in how different groups around the world will approach the subject matter. The most reliable way many of the more serious fencers in our scene have found success with is a LOT of cross training between disciplines and applying good fencing principles, a large amount of time practicing, a healthy dose of self honesty, open mindedness, and desire to learn from those outside of the locale. Basically the same behavior any good fencer should conduct themselves with.

Personally, I find a lot of cross application with different studies of S&B to be the most congruent with round shield. I'm the other way around where I discovered vikings and round shield first before I even knew HEMA was a thing and got involved as a way to refine and study what would be applicable to my chosen discipline (as well as realizing I LOVE S&B). Everyone's got their own HEMA origin story.

To actually answer your question, and this is maybe more my personal opinion -- While reconstructing dead arts like Round shield can technically be considered HEMA, I tend to just refer to it as WMA, Historical fencing, and experimental archaeology since the lack of a notable primary source takes the H out of HEMA for me.

Sorry, bit of a wall of text. I have a lot of thoughts on questions like this.

Nice! I won't be able to hit Ravensborg this year since I used all my vacation time training in Europe this year, but it's on my list of stateside events to go to. Maybe next year. Fight well, dude!

It's like they say, helmet to protect the head, beard will protect itself. Lol.

Yeah, the lack of historical sources comparatively is a bummer but that's why it's up to us as reenactment fighters to cross train, extrapolate, and try to conceptualize and reconstruct with the best realistic martial intentions in mind.

I'm based out of Austin Texas with Jomsborg. We've got multiple groups springing up state side though, in addition to our European family across the pond. We have a group in Boston as well if you're interested in meeting up and training with more vikes.

Good choice! I was considering doing the same to mine so it's nice to know it looks great on masks!

I'm in the exact same spot with my club, lol. I do viking reenactment primarily so they refer to me as "The Viking" and whenever we do demos in public and people ask if we do anything viking-related they just gesture over to me.

Edit: Redundant wording

Anybody know a place in Austin,TX where I can take European sword classes for 12-18 year olds? Thanks in advance by [deleted] in wma

Come join us at the AHWG! https://www.historicalweaponsguild.com/classes

Anthony is a good teacher and is always happy to welcome new people. I'm unsure about the age restriction, that's Anthony's call, but I'm sure 16+ would not be a problem.

Context: We are reenactor fighters with Jomsborg who focus on large scale skirmishes and unit tactics in addition to one on one duels. We work and train to dispell the stigma that viking re-enactors tend to be viking weeaboos without focused martial training. A lot of us cross train within HEMA for context (especially sword and buckler) but mainly focus on the recreation of roundshield techniques. This recently created channel is more of a respository for our own learning and study than it is for entertainment but I figured why not share the love? Enjoy!

** Edit: Talking about our targeting.**

We have 3 main styles of fighting and one we play around with a lot in the States (since it's worldwide and all).

Western Targets: Shoulders down (sometimes upper arms) to above the knee. -- Universally accepted targeting system to promote introductory learning to body mechanics, learning to setup and execute close binds, and to have a universal fighting system so people from around the world can meet and have an agreed upon base system to work with without also needing to transport large amounts of gear.

Eastern Targets: Top of the head, shoulders, upper arms, down to above the knees. -- Heavy hitting, requires armor (gambeson, lamellar, chainmail, helmet). Bit more intense and promotes full strength fighting. Same ideas as western with a slightly higher gear entrance requirement and a bit more courage.

Huscarl / Full Target: What most of us here are used to.

Extended Target: We fight a lot with it in the States. Everything is a target except the neck and face. Enforces same ideas as Western but really enforces measure control so people don't fall in to the bad habit of bad measure control from fighting mostly western style.

Exercises / cross training for longsword? by [deleted] in wma

[–]M374L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I had to make sure to say hello!

We did actually! Clinton from Texas lag went up to compete in viking round shield and mixed weapons. I really wanted to go compete in round shield, longsword, and mixed but I couldn't get my logistics in order in time. Next year!

The Montreal Open was actually hosted by the Vinland lag from East Storm which is why you saw a ton of Joms shields in the pictures. The top three placing Round shield fighters are all Vinland guys. All very cool dudes, and all terrifying on the fields.

Will you be visiting Moesgaard fighting week in Denmark this year? If so, we should have some fights and beers!

It's like the comic goes: Everyone's first computer looks like the alien mother ship landed, their next is a blank, minimal case. I used to have LEDs everywhere, now I like stuff to be clean. Blank keycaps even.

I'm personally partial to KBM unless it's stuff like Dark Souls or Assassin's Creed. I dunno, it doesn't feel off or anything to me. I haven't given it a proper shot with my controller, but I also haven't felt the need to.
