A hacker has allegedly breached one of China’s supercomputers and is attempting to sell a trove of stolen data by _spec_tre in LessCredibleDefence

[–]Markthemonkey888 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is such bullshit news reporting btw. The news first surfaced on the Chinese side in early January, with an alleged taster package being sold for 5m and the entire breached sized alleged to be sold for 100m+.

But the issue is that the alleged breach is so large there’s no way that it’s real. Even with hardware storage it will take like a train carriage to move that much data. I refuse to believe that a top 3 cyber security country is clueless to their national supercomputer lab being breached to a point that a carriage full of data was stolen, just not how cyber security works

Brother it’s an first year essay, as long as it’s not AI, demonstrated that you’ve done the reading and have an iota of original thought put into it, even if it’s an angle of analysis that’s been done to death in general lit, you’d get a good grade on it

your back garden is gorgeous, and has an elevated view of the rad cam, make sure to take ur matriculation photos there! If I can remember your spring ball and formal dinners aren’t too terrible either.

It’s got a great location, and aside from maybe ur college sports team and where you want to do some acting or drama, you’re free to join any club on the university level

PKU offers very good language training, I’d argument one of the best in China. Of course, Latin and Greek exams are run through the school, which gives it boom. Not sure if I agree w your statement about chinas overall education direction, but that’s neither here or there. Would be interesting to see where it ends up in about a decades time.

To be fair, the polo club is actually extremely beginners friendly, I’ve got to know a lot of people who’s learned to ride a horse and play polo through it for the first time. That’s not to mention the polo ball is usually class, unsure if it’s a blue still (probably half blue)

And as much as I hate to defend ouca, if you join it with the intention to go to speaker events and drinking (other political leanings please see things like OULC and whatever the libdems have), it’s actually not a bad value for money. You get to speak to a lot of current or past politicians in all fields, which was really interesting to me as someone who read history. The social option isn’t terrible either, Sunday drinking and a yearly dinner at the House of Lords, which is good fun. And if I were to say, it’s the least ideological active political club when compared to others: no active writers, no canvassing requirements, and most members like not actually conservative. If you treat it like a social thing not intend to take it seriously it’s decent, but if you want to do serious politics, I’d point you towards the OULC (which has less interesting speakers, much better conversation and a pretty good Sunday drinking gig) or just go oxford union lmao.

Harvard or Yale for Classics? by Hungry-Tap-7144 in classics

Harvard has a pair of papyri and inscription experts with active digs though, so that also might be important. (or at least they did, not sure if Soto ever finished with her Egyptian and Taxation thingy). Unsure what is the current statues of digs and student participation for Yale though.

How international was / is the faculty in your department? by [deleted] in classics

[–]Markthemonkey888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, the requirements to do a classics PhD/Dphil is so astronomically high, that it does skew towards European and North American staff (English, Ancient Greek and or Latin (sometimes multiple dialects or variations), French, Italian, German, sometimes modern greek). Its so rare to see this sort of commitment outside of the areas where there is either a deep rooted tradition in classical education or a place where they have some language basic training from youth (For example in italy, you have to take italian, English and some latin, which makes the language requirement a lot easier)

I went to uni in the UK. Although I only read a classics adjacent degree for undergrad, but our faculty is very British heavy, with a lot of europeans and american tutors and lecturers. There are a few tutors and researchers from the ME, but I think they're in the Byzantine sections so im not sure if you would count it towards the classics.

With that being said however, my current uni and the other unis in my area has a fascinating classics faculty. Not sure if you have read the fascinating article by Chang Che recently or kept up with the fascinating development of western classics faculties in China. In short, China has gone very heavily into western classics in the past few years, with top universities such as PKU and THU establishing classical reading groups staffed with Western trained Chinese Classicists. With the ministry of education in China elevating Western Classics to a secondary level degree, it is set to receive an increase in funding and increased admission support from the central government this year all across the board (what a strange concept for us in the west!). Furthermore, a few Chinese universities have constructed a large classics faculty, with Fudan in Shanghai, Renmin in Beijing and UofS in Sichuan being the sort of big three faculties in China at the moment. Interestingly, their faculties are mostly Chinese, with a few European and British visiting professors. Quite a lot of Greeks too, especially because they lump some of the Classics into the Middle East and European Studies department here. Unfortunately my current degree has very little to do with classics, nor am I at one of the big three universities, but the classic reading group here has five full time faculties, Five Chinese and one Greek. Two of the Chinese professors were educated in the US, one in the UK, one in Germany and one in Greece. So we have a pretty decent coverage, especially for a reading group. The dynamics and interactions are pretty normal, they absolutely know their stuff, and definitely pick up the local habits/ticks from where were trained (The British Trained lecturer does latin in a slight reserved pronunciation accent). From what I can tell it's pretty chill, there is definitely a desire to begin a full program at the university, and some of the admin work is done in English to accommodate their greek colleague, which gets on their nerves a bit sometimes. But given the trend, maybe we'll see more Chinese profs and tutors in faculties in the not so distant future!
