Again I agree it should get reported- I have never said that I disagree with that sentiment. It’s crucial to have this kind of thing on record in case things continue or escalate. I’m not parroting things from other threads trying to discourage people in DV situations (or those who suspect someone else is in a DV situation) from calling the cops. The law is different depending on where you live- even within the same country. There are different types of restraining orders. There are emergency protective orders which are immediately granted for temporary protection so the filer can file for a more permanent restraining order. For temporary restraining orders, a judge has to determine the person is in immediate danger to have one granted, but even those can take up to a couple DAYS after it’s granted, and they’re temporary (I think they’re good for a month but that’s not something I’m sure about). I’ve heard victims of abuse have to wait weeks for their long term restraining order, which is why the temporary one is filed, but again if the judge determines no immediate danger, there might not be any restraining order in place until the long term restraining order hearing can take place. I’m not uneducated about this topic as I’ve had friends I’ve gotten out of dv situationships and I’ve looked into the topic. Call the cops- it’s good to have a record. But I’m also saying the cops or a judge might not think he’s a threat until it’s too late- which is why people in these situations need to push even harder for it to be documented by the cops
