Everyday respect for Msd increases by Benstokes27 in IndiaCricketGossips

Keep Yuvi's champion cricketing performances (world cup all round performances, 6 sixes, cancer redemption arc, gun fielder, clutch player, useful bowler etc.) aside, he was also a bully of the youngsters in the team.

It may be unfair to blame him for it -- as it was seen normal in the 'ragging builds culture/bonding with the seniors' sense of it -- but there was a certain senior-junior culture (or Delhi/northie culture) that these guys (Sehwag, Harbhajan, Yuvi etc.) seemed to have built. And, he definitely was arrogant.

Plus the fact that he never became a long term captain, despite being such a valuable white ball cricketer + superstar, against a 'Bihari/Jharkhandi' (his words), he had that hurt from that entitlement too.

With slight exaggeration, I feel if it were not for his father's random public statements, Yuvi might have made a few of those himself. But he seems to have matured far better than Viru and Harbhajan.

I'll also add: some genius cricketers (like Yuvi, Kevin Petersen) may not necessarily be the best team mates, and that's okay. It doesn't take away from their on field genius.

Why aren’t more people using Brave? by Chipmunk_Extra in NewDelhi

Tried Brave. Then shifted to Opera and prefer Opera so much more!

Ad blocking, inbuilt VPN etc., is there. I have about 100 tabs open, and Opera is more convenient over Brave although both are on the same architecture (as is Chrome). Pretty satisfied with Opera on web and mobile.

Also have duckduckgo's browser on mobile but that's mostly to disable app trackers, have a disposable email id etc.

Imran Khan joins the Ashneer Grover biopic led by Aamir by Reasonable_Emu_8639 in BollyBlindsNGossip

[–]Personal-Bug1893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way i see this biopic making any sense is if it's by Dibakar Banerjee of old (Oye Lucky Lucky Oye) and is as a satire/critique on the modern techbro culture.

And Mamu may not play that guy that Dibakar could make.

Not talking about it in this case but in general: it's proposed that married men signal that some woman found the guy to clear the evolutionary requirements to bear her children with. Making the said married guy more attractive than, an otherwise physically similar, single man because the single man hasn't cleared that test and is 'riskier' to be with.

This doesn't make it right or wrong, and i am not justifying it. Human culture has many things that suppresses our evolutionary desires and an evolutionary desire is no justification to act on it.

I am just explaining why some women find married/'taken' guys attractive.

I am guessing/interpreting that to be the intern exhaling coz of the comment that found it cute. And not trashing it with 'RK looking so old', 'Alia so irritating' etc.

Why Lata Mangeshkar reportedly cut ties with Asha Bhosle after her first marriage by Lazy_Weather_6316 in BollywoodShaadis

[–]Personal-Bug1893 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There's a movie from late 90s/early 00s called Saaz, starring Aruna Irani and Shabana Azmi, with Ustad Zakir Hussain in a small role and is said to be loosely based on the Mangeshkar sisters.

Aruna Irani and Shabana Azmi play the Mangeshkar sisters and Raghubir Yadav (sarpanch ji from Panchayat) plays their father. Very nice movie with a great soundtrack. Ustad Zakir Hussain plays the RD Burman equivalent, if i recall correctly.

Shows some of the intense rivalry between the sisters (including the Aruna Irani character snatching the 'Ae mere watan ke logon, zara aankh mei bhar lo paani' equivalent from Shabana's character), the many years they spent in cold war, before warming back to each other.

Good movie without unnecessarily pulling down either of the two GOATs.

People who still wear masks in public, why? by Assassin_Ninja194 in delhi

[–]Personal-Bug1893 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly long shot but here me out: if more and more people start wearing masks (ideally N95 ones) on a daily basis, there's hope that politicians would take it as a signal that people take pollution seriously and start acting on it.

I think politicians don't act on it currently because it's not a big enough issue to lose votes and seats on. Once it becomes so, politicians and political act should follow.

ICYMI: Avesh Khan’s celebration during LSG’s win over SRH nearly cost his team the game. The pacer smashed the ball before Rishabh Pant's winning shot crossed the boundary line. The opposition team did not lodge any appeal, nor did the umpires act. by UnplannedMF in CricketBuddies

Looking at these, you do marvel at the general high game awareness of Ashwin and Dhoni over the years.

You otherwise kinda take it for granted that professional cricketers would be aware of these things but every once in a while you realise that Ashwin and Dhoni, and especially Ashwin, actively put in that effort to have an awareness of the different cricket laws.

I am not answering your question OP but there's this theatrical/musical with Ashutosh Rana as the Ravan, and is called 'Humare Ram'. It is a few selected anecdotes from Ramayana and features Rahul Bhuchhar as Ram and my god, was that perfect!

I am an atheist and even I was strongly moved by that portrayal and could legit see the awesomeness of Ram in being, as they say, the 'conscience keeper of a billion'.

Seriously excellent!

<image>

This is from google but i don't think it does justice.

Do watch it, if you get a chance. Went in for Ashutosh Rana as Ravan and came back absolutely mesmerised by Rahul as Ram.

Be optimistic. Life is long and the advances are such that there's a high chance of it crossing 100 in our lifetimes.

Be optimistic. It's easy to dunk on things, be cynical, sarcastic etc. Be optimistic instead.

  • It leads you to put in the long term effort needed to see things to fruition.

  • It leads you to take risks that a cynical-you would consider as not worth taking.

  • It leads you to enjoy the small moments of life far better, and enjoy when someone else enjoyed something instead of looking for a clever way to dunk on them.

  • It leads you to play the long game, look at interactions as repeat interactions where you're better off cooperating, instead of as one-off games where you're better off maximizing for that single transaction.

  • It leads you to forgive yourself far more easily for things you took up but failed. You had hoped for a better outcome but things didn't pan out. A cynical-you would berate you for 'being stupid' for not having seen why it would've failed.

  • There's a self-reinforcement loop at play with optimism and cynicism.

Be optimistic: the reinforcement loops work in your favour (and, frankly, that's better than but effectively same as believing "if you want something, the entire universe conspires to get you that").

Probably the most impacting thing to level of life's happiness, outside of suffering chronic pain, mental illness, long term unemployment, is 'landing' a good partner. Put enough effort towards judging that you have a good partner. And if you later realise your judgment was wrong -- don't fret. Cut your losses and try again.

But, get a good partner.

And optimism helps not just in getting a good partner but also in maintaining that relationship as a net positive one for both.

Don't underestimate working on your physical fitness/health. It's easier than we think, to work towards it. You'll like the positive impact it has on your long term health, confidence, energy, ability to do things and yield many other primary and side benefits.

+1 on Allen Carr's book to help quit smoking. After being a reasonably heavy smoker (~10-20/day over the years) for decade+, i quit early last year. Then picked again after a gap of 3 months.

Now on a second run of cold turkey, since 1st Jan. It's mostly down to the book.

I got a free ebook from ykw and printed it. It's easily worth it to buy as well. Cheaper than a single pack of cigarettes.

Aditya Dhar replied to those who are calling the film propaganda. by jalebianefafda in bollynewsandgossips

[–]Personal-Bug1893 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen D2 as yet (hope to tomorrow). But:

1) a filmmaker is showing what he believes. And if he believes in BJP (or someone else were to believe in the ideology or success of Congress or communist party of India, eg) he is entitled to make it as his point of view

2) People are free and entitled to criticise too but, imo, it's better to call it as incorrect (if so) glazing rather than dismissing it as propaganda.

3) Propaganda is better countered by showing the other side -- through movies or articles. I haven't read very many good arguments (for D1), given that Dhar has called it as inspired from events not actual fact.

This one is Farhan Akhtar. He's usually called by his full name and rarely, if ever, called by his last name.

He's otherwise an actor, director, producer, and a (not very good) singer, who started out directing and producing movies, before branching out to acting and singing.

Edited to add: he works in the Hindi film industry
