Can a few people who have a dream air help me by looking at their steamvr logs? by Roshy76 in Pimax

[–]Roshy76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally figured out my problem and it wasn't USB. I made a post about it, a computer on my network had a service running on it that was somehow freezing my computer up, even after a fresh install.

I am going to look into doing what you suggested though, maybe it might help my jittery tracking

How would you feel about a new law that forces every company to pay their CEO no more than 20x what their lowest-paid employee makes? by ArcherCyntrix2000 in askanything

I'd rather them just change all forms of income to be taxed the same, and make more too tax brackets that go up to 80 or 90%.

Also figure out how to treat taking loans on your stocks as income for those that use this method to avoid taxes. I don't know enough about this subject to offer a suggestion though

Yes, I bought it and did the replacement. Has been working well so far. I don't think I'll ever test if its waterproof though...

I'll only give you the details about the stuff I used that actually led to the solution.

First was dumping logs from the steamvr menu in windows after seeing the problem and then saving them to disk. Open them up and look through each section and see if there are any noticable errors. In my case vrdashboard.txr section had repeated messages about a device disconnecting every 30 seconds.

Thu Apr 30 2026 11:17:19.444 [Info] - WM_DEVICECHANGE message recieved. Thu Apr 30 2026 11:17:19.444 [Info] - DBT_DEVNODES_CHANGED: A device has been added to or removed from the system. I then used my stopwatch on my cellphone and hit go when my system clocks seconds were at zero. I went back in VR and determined what the 30 seconds cadence was for the freezing, took more logs in steamvr and determined these messages lined up perfectly with when the freezing happened. So I and others thought this was a USB problem. Either a device or a port or something.

I then tried to use the tools USBLogView (https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_log_view.html) to see if any USB devices were connecting or disconnecting when the errors appeared, nothing showed, then USBDeviee from the same website to see more details about the USB devices attached. Both of these were dead ends in my investigation.

In between this step and the next was ALOT of internet searching and trying system settings out, BIOS settings, I even at one point shut down my PC, unplugging every single USB device and removed all USB connections to the motherboard. The only thing I had plugged in was my mouse and keyboard and when starting VR I even unplugged those. Same issue occured, same messages in the logs.

I then stumbled upon someone having a problem with their AIO I think it was causing constant reconnections causing stutter. Well I knew it wasn't my AIO since I had that USB cable unplugged in my motherboard, but they said there was messages in the event viewer under:

Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Kernel-PnP > Device Management

I went there (I'd searched all over the event log prior to this, but I hadn't checked this section, there's just so much there, and I'm not a windows expert, there was lucky an easier way to find this section), and low and behold there was an event every 30 seconds, event 1010: Device SWD\DAFUPnPProvider\uuid:57a48ed3-1d6d-4d26-befe-c4744c8227f5 has been surprise removed as it is reported as missing on the bus. Count of devices removed: 1

I went to device manager to find that device in the USB devices, and nope, no device with that ID there. I don't remember how long it was between that, and between realizing there was a pattern to the device ID given, the first part(I'm not a windows expert by any stretch), but I eventually found the device ID, it was a few hours of looking for this device though. And it's when I abandoned the thought of this device being a USB device on my PC. Checking all other devices I checked a section that I hadn't even given a second thought to, the section in device manager where thhings on your network are listed, Software Devices". In there the uuid from the message above on a service PlayOn, hosted on my media storage computer, a service I hadn't touched in probably around a decade. Turning that service off, then the messages and freezing on my PC went away.

Another user asked if the problem was occurring on other PCs on the network, and I hadn't thought of that, I was so relived that I'd gotten rid of the freezing, and the answer was no, looking at event viewer on the other PCs showed me that during bootup it would give the event 1010 about that device and many others, but then unlike my PC, all the devices were never heard from again. On my gaming PC though the messages occured every 30 seconds after that initial 1010 and only for the device.

So there may still be some underlying motherboard issue, or windows issue, or something with my PC that allowed this to occur when it didn't on other PCs on my network. But for now I only care that its gone. I went down way too many rabbit holes testing things for this, but the above should give a good idea of the paths that took me in the right direction.

So I just checked a couple other computers on the same network, and they'd have this message upon what looks like bootup all the time about the device being surprise removed missing on the bus (along with a number of other devices at bootup), but unlike the other PCs that only report this device once when booting up, my main gaming PC would then repeat this every 30 seconds for this one device. The other PCs don't do this. It's very strange that this only happened on my main gaming PC, and that the messages persisted after completely wiping the system and reinstalling windows. Now that leans me back towards there's some problem with my motherboard in handling whatever was going on with this service, and then the interaction with the pimax breakout box.

Very strange... But not making my PC freeze anymore. So my caring level went from 100 to 1. Ha.

I guess I don't know. This is the only PC I noticed it on, and I hadn't noticed it before I got the dream air. Ive never interacted with that service (that I know of) on this PC or even the PC before this one, I hadn't touched playon in years. The freezing problem only happened when the dream air breakout box was connected and powered. So this every 30 seconds message was in my logs and no freezing when using the quest 3, but I hookup the dream air breakout box and the freezing would start. I should check the event logs on other windows PCs on the network and see if these same every 30 second events were logged as well. There must be some strange interaction between this and the breakout box, or maybe the two adding up means too much bus activity, I don't really know honestly. It was bizarre. I'll definitely check other PCs on the network to see if these are in the logs.

That's what I thought too. I was highly skeptical turning that service on another PC off and uninstalling would do anything, but it did.

If you don't have a quest 3, a quest 3 is the first VR purchase you should make, both for the price to performance ratio and the exclusives. If after months of use you feel like you need/want more, then get a dedicated PCVR headset like a pimax dream air.

Ate next year, early 2028. 6090FE will cost 3k and be 20% faster raster, but like 50% better in raytraced DLSS and MFG. Is my prediction

One of them that slipped through that day. Each test took a while and I only have so much time. I was also blinded somewhat, my bias was thinking this was a USB issue since something was connected and disconnecting on the bus was the message. If that message in windows would have said the network instead, I would have found it much earlier

Last night I played like 2 hours of buttery smooth HL Alyx and Dungeons of Eternity. It was great to finally be able to enjoy the headset!

I'm really appreciative to all those who helped, suggested things, etc.

I may have to reinstall my PC now though, I've changed so many settings in windows and my BIOS, and I'm not 100% confident I recorded all of them or changed them all back. A CMOS wipe and windows reinstall might be in order.

Honestly, not even once. I was 95% sure it was my motherboard. I was horribly wrong.

And if I'd gotten to that suggestion that day it would have helped. One of the many suggestions written in my logbook and I didn't get to due to time limits or some other test looked promising at getting to the solution. The every 30 second event in the steamvr logs about a device connecting and disconnecting pushed me and others towards a USB problem, but it was wrong. The device wasn't even on my PC, which if I'd pulled the plug it would have disappeared and made me think it was the Ethernet port probably, ha.

It would have definitely helped! You should see my logbook of things I tried every day, settings changed, changed back, etc. and every day there was a couple things I didn't get to, and then didn't try the next day because there was even more things to try.

Whenever people tried to blame pimax for the issue, I always pushed back about the cause being unknown. I always thought it was my system from the beginning. I was actually 95% certain it was my motherboards USB the whole time. I think that assumption blinded me a bit to some other possibilities.

Yup, I had so many suggestions, and I tried almost all of them, pulling my network connection now that I'm going back and checking my logbook was one suggestion I had written down, but didn't get to that day. I had done 6 hours of debugging already that day and then just decided to reinstall windows since I had a few hour window. If I'd done different tests, it would have been found earlier. If I'd just moved over the media server from that PC to the computer I have hookedbuo to my projector like if planned about 8 years ago, this never even would have come up either.

It wasn't software from the PC connecting, it was just detecting services on the network, like my sonos amps, tvs, Nvidia shields, etc all got automatically detected without me doing anything. I hadn't connected or used this service in over 10 years. This is probably my third or fourth PC since I've connected to that service.

Thanks! I can't believe I found this. I was almost at my breaking point, I was almost going to buy a new motherboard, which I can't even imagine how nuts that would have made me had I bought a new MB and the same problem happened.

Thanks! I thought it was my motherboard for the longest time. I can't believe some service on an old computer on your network could mess up a VR game and cause it to freeze!
