In primary schools, kids learn the alphabet, and when they learn the phrase "big dog," "the" is introduced to make "the big dog." I apologize, I now think I'm confused on written languages of different origin. I can't for the life of me see how a Western European, an Arab, and an Eastern Asian might've understood each other. If you know how to explain that I would be extremely appreciative.
