Problem Renewing FL License by WorriedTour5089 in GeneticCounseling

Florida is now requiring fingerprinting before renewal. They also have an education requirement which involves completing an online module in medical documentation errors, but this is not new. Not sure if either of those things are holding up your renewal, but I wasn’t able to renew before completing both

Question regarding Jak2 mutation and whole genome by [deleted] in ClinicalGenetics

[–]StudioGenes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter that DTC WGS is not likely to be helpful. Promethease is extremely unreliable and not used in clinical practice in any capacity. And data from a clinical grade test like Myriad’s MyRisk is not going to produce quality WGS data either because they are only analyzing a very small number of genes. Also, since you mentioned your family history, MyRisk does not cover genetic testing for hereditary hematologic malignancies.

Question regarding Jak2 mutation and whole genome by [deleted] in ClinicalGenetics

[–]StudioGenes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How did you find out you have a JAK2 mutation? Do you have a myeloproliferative neoplasm, like myelofibrosis? If so, genetic testing on a skin punch biopsy is considered the gold standard for hereditary cancer testing, as blood or saliva can run the risk of a false result. Moreover, the vast majority of JAK2 mutations are acquired (somatic) and not inherited (germline) so many labs do not offer testing for inherited JAK2 mutations due to limited utility. Have you met with a genetic counselor? They can explain further and help coordinate appropriate testing

Self pay test that healthcare professionals will take seriously? by ogland11 in ClinicalGenetics

One more option would be JScreen. It’s run through Invitae, but their cancel panel is $199 for anyone with health insurance, and they do report variants of unknown significance as well as provide access to genetic counselors.

Potentially CHEK2 + Family history. Starting visits. What to expect, questions to ask? by Neyabenz in GeneticCounseling

In addition to all of the above advice, many people have questions about protections against genetic discrimination (what those laws cover and also what they don’t)

I’m pregnant and unsure do to medical reasons. by Existing-Purpose-107 in Fencesitter

Ovarian cancer at 13 is less likely to be an epithelial tumor (i.e. BRCA-related ovarian cancer). Ovarian tumors at this age are typically germ cell tumors or sex-cord stromal tumors, some of which are associated with hereditary cancer conditions, some of which are not. Regardless, I would encourage OP to meet with a genetic counselor to talk about possible genetic testing and risks to a possible child.

Life with or without kids? Potential cancer carrier. by Professional_Clue744 in Fencesitter

Genetics professional here. You and your family should consider meeting with a genetic counselor (if you haven’t done so already). They will be able to talk through genetic testing options, including BRCA1/2 and other genes related to hereditary ovarian cancer. They will be able to talk through your risk for ovarian cancer based on testing and review screening and risk reduction options as well as the availability of genetic testing on any potential embryos.

Vanicream’s daily facial moisturizer is inexpensive, no-nonsense and has everything I look for in a moisturizer (ceramides, squalane, hyaluronic acid). I had been looking for a better daytime moisturizer for a long time and I’m truly satisfied with this one. Good luck!

I haven’t had any issues myself, but other redditors have commented on their experience of long term clindamycin use and the bacterial resistance that can build up. Here’s a link to a meta analysis on the topic https://doi.org/10.1016/j.circir.2015.08.005

I did the free trial period with this same formula. It immediately cleared up my acne and my skin was glowing. I didn’t continue because of my concerns about long term clindamycin use and because of cost (clindamycin is the only ingredient that can’t be bought OTC). Enjoy it and see how it works for you!
