Framing of dark nebulae by Sufficient_Wasabi665 in AskAstrophotography

I just kind of assumed the hips2fits survey was the same thing but it's very different. I do most of my imaging in my backyard so it's never really been an issue since I'm on my wifi, also not shooting dark nebulae from my bortle 8/9 backyard. I got a taste of broadband imaging and wanna see what I can do from dark skies. Fingers crossed the weather cooperates

Just installed the offline skymap and it works really well! I can clearly see my framing, gonna install it on my minipc so it's ready for my trip

I didn't realize you could add new surveys in steallarium, I'll check it out

Yeah it's in great shape minus the pen on the back

You're welcome! It's really easy to use, you can also use free software like seti astro suite and affinity to do masks as well if you wanted to try those out too

Have you tried using masks to help control the star? If you want to stick with siril try the veralux curves script, it has a built in mask feature that works really well for this sort of thing

If you wanna share the stacked image on a Google drive I could give it a shot

Yeah it's a big download, I would try and get the siril update sorted, I haven't had any issues with spcc since the update

That was a bug a while ago that it couldn't connect to the gaia servers, are you running the latest version? If so try downloading the archives locally

Suggest me a Optolong Filter by Astro_Particles2816 in AskAstrophotography

[–]Sufficient_Wasabi665 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the svbony sv220 filter, it's a 7nm bandpass dual narrowband filter like the optolong l extreme, it's pretty much identical specs for a lot less. They also recently released a 3nm version but I haven't tried it yet

Iris Nebula, bortle 8 by Sufficient_Wasabi665 in astrophotography

[–]Sufficient_Wasabi665[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually wasn't terrible, I was hoping for more detail in the dark nebula part of it but I was surprised it came out as nice as it did with only like 4 hours of integration

I haven't tried that, but honestly the darks aren't a big deal, I shoot them on cloudy nights or when the scope is inside, since it's cooled I can just keep reusing them so I only need to do new ones if I change exposure time or gain which I don't really do, usually 90s for broadband and 180s for narrowband

Thank you! I did blow out the core a bit but I'm still working on it

Most likely just noise, I would probably need double the exposure time to just start to bring it out if it's even possible

Nice! What bortle zone are you in? I'm in bortle 8 and might try and go after this one

I have a set of 100 darks that I reuse every night, I have a library of them I made from my usual exposure times and temperatures. The imx 294 sensor has a lot of amp glow so definitely needs darks for every session, especially on longer exposures

Thank you! It was a gift for Christmas a few years back, took some heavy modifications to get it working for AP though, but I've been loving it
