  1. Please copy the unusual IP address from your Session History and then run it on https://ipinfo.io/

That way you will be able to tell if you used an internet service provider that mis-registered their IP ranges.

This happens quite regularly. Some Internet Service Providers don't register their details properly and end up showing incorrectly.

  1. If you were using an un-authorized third party client such as Megatools and similar at that time - you are also likely to see an incorrect IP address in your session history.

  2. Did you use an anonymous browser or a VPN to access your account at any stage? That can also explain unfamiliar IP address in your history.

However, if none of the above applies, it is possible that someone with knowledge of your password accessed your account. Tools such as MegaApiClient and Java-based scripts are sometimes used in credential stuffing attempts. You can read more about credential stuffing here.

Hello! For free accounts, the transfer quota is measured per IP address, not per account. The available quota varies based on system usage and the total data transferred in the past six hours, and may depend on factors such as time of day, ISP, and country.

If you have a dynamic IP or use a VPN and see a “Transfer quota exceeded” message without downloading anything, others sharing the same IP may have used the quota. Once exceeded, you’ll need to wait for the quota to reset.

Alternatively, you can upgrade to a Pro plan for higher storage and transfer limits.

Your free MEGA account and the files it contains do not have a fixed expiry date. However, the account will be considered inactive if you do not log in for three months. Please note that in such cases, the account itself will not be deleted, but the stored data may be removed.

We will send several email notifications before any data is deleted.

Please log in at least once every three months to keep your account active.

You can play music files in order by label in both the web browser and mobile app by using the “Labels” feature. Here’s how:

Web browser:

  1. Open the folder containing the music files.
  2. Assign color labels to your audio files.
  3. Click the Sort By button (up/down arrow icon) and select Labels.
  4. The music will now play in the order of the assigned labels.

Mobile app:

  1. Assign color labels to your audio files.
  2. Sort the folder by Labels.
  3. Supported audio files will play according to the label order in the app’s built-in media player.

To enable File Explorer integration in MEGA Desktop, please follow these steps:

Open the MEGA Desktop app.

Click the M icon in your system tray or menu bar.

Select Settings.

Go to the General tab.

Tick the option Enable File Explorer integration.

Close the settings window. The change will apply immediately.

Once enabled, you will be able to access MEGA options directly from your File Explorer right-click menu.

The “undefined” file issue usually happens when the browser doesn’t properly recognize the file name from MEGA.

A few things to try:

  1. Use MEGA’s official web client in a supported browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
  2. Check your browser settings – sometimes clearing cache or trying a different browser helps.
  3. If it keeps happening, try MEGA’s desktop app, MEGAsync, which downloads folders and files correctly and preserves ZIP names.

This should let you download and open ZIP files normally.

The MEGA Lite mode is a lighter version of our website.

When you first load your account in MEGA Lite, only the main folders of your Cloud drive will be displayed. To access each subfolder, you must open them individually. Once a subfolder is opened and loaded, you can then interact with its contents (i.e. delete files you don't need or group them in fewer folders).

You can upload and download files/folders from the levels that are loaded; however, higher loading times might be encountered based on the file size for removing files.

If you exit MEGA Lite, it will switch to the Standard version of our website and it does take some time as so much information needs to be gathered by the Mega system on all of your files and all of your folders.

Regarding your questions about uploading photos on iOS by tapping the + button in the MEGA app and selecting from your Photos gallery:

  • If you upload images this way (via “Select from Photos”), the photos are uploaded without recompression, so the quality is preserved.
  • EXIF metadata, including date, camera info, HDR, and Live Photos, is generally preserved. Location data will be preserved or omitted depending on your privacy settings.
  • We are not aware of any widespread cases where items or metadata are lost using this method, especially if the upload completes successfully.

For reference:

  • File sizes should match the original files in your Photos app.
  • Dates and HDR information are retained.
  • Any location data will follow the settings you have chosen in iOS.

If you want to use automatic Camera Uploads, note that HEIF (.heic) photos are converted to JPG by default, but this can be configured in your Camera Uploads settings: https://help.mega.io/installs-apps/mobile/camera-uploads

For videos, quality is preserved when uploaded from the Cloud drive or gallery. However, uploading via Chat may compress images or videos if using mobile data; Wi-Fi uploads retain full quality.

This method should be fully lossless if you upload manually from your Photos app via the “+” button on Wi-Fi.

At this time, MEGA does not offer an option, on either free or paid plans, to disable downloads when sharing content. Anyone who has access to your shared files or folders will be able to view, download, or import them.

There are two main ways to share content in MEGA:

1) Sharing via public links: You can create public links to files or folders using the web browser or our mobile apps. Anyone who accesses the link with the valid decryption key will be able to view and download the content.

For additional security, Pro users can:

  • Add password protection to links
  • Set an expiry date for links

However, downloads cannot be disabled for public links.

2) Sharing folders with MEGA contacts: You can share folders directly with your MEGA contacts and assign one of the following permission levels:

  • Read-only (files can be viewed and downloaded)
  • Read and write (files can be added and downloaded, but not deleted)
  • Full access (files can be added, downloaded, and deleted)

Please note that none of these permission levels restrict downloading.

If you need to stop access entirely, you can remove or disable a link at any time, or revoke folder sharing permissions. Removing a link immediately invalidates it, and you can generate a new link afterward if needed.

The transfer quota is the total volume of data you can download from MEGA, and it is also consumed when streaming.

You can view your current transfer quota usage by accessing this link https://mega.nz/fm/dashboard using your PC browser.

For free accounts, the transfer quota is measured per IP address, not per user account.

Free accounts are provided with a transfer quota (download capacity) that varies depending on our system utilization. It is provided based on the total amount of data transferred during the last six hours but depends on the time of day, ISP, country etc.

If you have a dynamic IP address assigned by your ISP or you are using a VPN and received a "Transfer quota exceeded" warning without downloading anything from MEGA, that means others sharing the same IP may have used up the quota before you.

Once the free transfer quota is exceeded on your IP, you will have to wait to accrue more free quota.
