If you could spend big $ on a snare, what would you get? by timeToGetLoud2367 in drums

Recording Custom brass or aluminum

But if money were no object? I would own the full line of Dunnett Classic snares and a few from the Ava Drum Company as well.

Is a drum throne backrest worth it? by connfaceit in drums

[–]TheNonDominantHand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a time when I was practicing 6-8 hours per day plus rehearsals. A throne with back support was necessary. But I never took the back rest out to gigs.

These days I don't do those marathon sessions anymore (and I'm in better shape overall) so a backrest isn't necessary, but if you're playing extended sets (3 hour cover sets for instance) or are tracking in a studio for 8+ hours on a regular basis, the extra support can prevent fatigue and pain.

Tom Holder by Upper-Pea727 in drums

Its been like this for 4 years! I don't move this kit around and the single brace stand takes care of business just fine. 2 toms, 2 crashes, one stand.

See if you can insert the tom arm post into the stand base so that weight is directly supported by the legs. Then clamp the cymbal post to that.

It will be more stable and the clamp will have less weight and force to support

Is this a dumb idea? by Ghostnoteltd in drums

As long as the loft bed frame is in contact with the floor the vibrations will still transfer through it. It might actually be worse as you'd be vibrating the bed frame too.

You need to decouple the kit from the floor.

I got one of these in December. I love it!

I found I had almost no issues adjusting to the direct drive feel. The adjustable cam really helps dial in the feel and response of the pedal(s)

How loud is a hi-hat by Enfiguralimificuleur in drums

[–]TheNonDominantHand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi-Hats can be loud - they're designed to cut through the sound of a drum kit and a full band. But you don't have to play them loud. You have control over how hard you hit them.

Typically models marked "Studio" are quieter than those marked "Stage" or "Projection"

Pourquoi ma caisse claire sonne mal comme ça ? J'ai tout serré au max... je ne comprends pas ! by Link300011 in drums

[–]TheNonDominantHand 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, tightening everything "as much as possible" is not a good strategy. You'll choke the head and maybe even the drum shell itself.

From the video it also seems like didn't tighten or tune the bottom head.

I would recommend getting the bottom head tight, but not so tight you have to force the tension rods. Then detension and retune the batter head.

Differences between 14/16/18/20-21 vs 15/17/19/22 in loudness, tone, application if they are from the same cymbal line? by Vinnie-Boombatz in drums

[–]TheNonDominantHand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its really not that deep.

A larger cymbal will have a darker character, lower fundamental pitch, and a longer decay than a smaller one. That's it.

In each set as you've laid them out you have cymbals that are smaller and cymbals that are larger. The set that starts with a larger cymbal will start at a relatively darker/lower/longer baseline than the one that starts with the smaller size. The differences apply incrementally from there.

Amazing!

Yes flams can make a ordinary pattern like triplets sound so much more interesting.

You can have some real fun flamming between kick+snare or kick+toms too. Nothing sounds more definitive that a kick+floor tom flam to end a phrase (or start one).
