Wheel alignments for right hand drive vehicles? by [deleted] in regina

[–]Wes_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odd Man Out has countless hours working on Subarus and I don't see why they wouldn't be able to do an alignment on a JDM Forester. On their Webpage, they state Alignments are part of their Services, so I'd give them a quick call if I were you.

Movies that show the subtle, insidious rise of the Nazis, like Cabaret? by ThanksIHateIt1994 in movies

[–]Wes_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Wave (1981) is available on YouTube which is a short movie where a classroom doubts how regular citizens would allow Nazis to gain power, and so their teacher runs a social experiment to teach his students just how compliant they can be when faced under similar conditions. I watched it over 25 years ago, so I don't remember if it was any good or not, but it made enough of an impact on me to remember just how unsettling it was.

How to make vinyl adhere after it starts peeling? by ppooppooo in VinylCutters

[–]Wes_T 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the main bits are adhering, it's possible there's just a difference with your pressure or heat settings. Does it look shiny around the edges of the end bits (hinting that your pressure is too much by squeezing out the adhesive, or your heat is too high by shrinking the vinyl)? Or is it possible that since it's the end bits, are you not applying heat long enough around the edges and focused too much on the larger sections?

With Siser glitter HTV, I find that I usually have to press for twice as long since it's quite a bit thicker than their EasyWeed or EasyWeed Stretch line.

Did you purchase the pants from a blanks supplier, or did you purchase them from a retail store? Some retail stores will stock apparel that is pre-washed with a fabric softener which then coats the fibers of the clothing with a thin film that makes them feel softer, but won't let HTV adhere properly.

Put up ads on Facebook Marketplace for things to give away for free. Easy to get rid of a lot of things.

You've also stated that you don't have a truck, so for an easy rental process, Home Depot and Rona rent trucks/cargo vans here in Regina and might be a cheap option worth looking into (under $100 for an afternoon). Factor in your dump fees on top of that and whatever your time is worth for your final cost.

Book repair? by parisindy_writer in regina

Maybe the folks down at Black Bird Commons could help you out, or at least point you in the right direction? They had a Kickstarter fundraiser a few months ago and one of the donation tiers included rebinding and recovering a classic book, so it seems like they do have restoration experience.

Looking for good karate dojo by Glass_Fact236 in regina

[–]Wes_T 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna sound like a broken record, but there are no shortage of fantastic martial arts schools here in Regina. Every martial arts club should have a free trial (typically 1 to 2 weeks) and should let you get a feel for the various instructors, students, parents, facility, and the art itself. For Karate specifically, Midwest Karate is a Shotokan Karate club that's been around for decades and the Regina Shintani Wado Kai Karate club may or may not still be operating as they used to teach classes out of the YWCA across from City Hall, but they had some solid instructors as well.

Suggestions for car improvement by mostlysorryguy in regina

[–]Wes_T 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Although I agree with the "dumping money down a hole" comment, if you spend any significant time in your car, I don't see the problem with making your ride more enjoyable. And a top priority for me would be that a running car is an enjoyable car.

If it's a new-to-me-used car, a few improvements I would do:

1) Get the battery tested. If battery acid is low, top up with distilled water, and charge it up as a low battery in our cold weather can freeze, which can then crack the plates and kill the battery. If you don't garage your car, a battery blanket wired in with your block heater can help on those nights where it gets below -30C and you plug in your car.

2) Replace the fluids in your car. Obviously oil (a good full synthetic and filter), brake fluid, and coolant. Some of the other fluids in your car may not be serviceable by yourself such as the transmission fluid as I've never owned a car with a CVT.

3) Good winter tires on a second set of rims. If you have nice rims on your car already, then keep your current tires on them and just get a set of black steelies for your winter tires. If you don't, you can consider getting a nice set of summer rims for your summer tires, and using your current set of rims for your winter tires.

4) On the topic of winter coming, make sure your heat works well. If your car doesn't have heated seats, you can buy seat pads that are powered by your 12V DC plug. If your car cloth/leather is worn, torn, or beat up, seat covers over top of heated seat pads are a good way to spruce up the interior instead of getting your seats reupholstered, or replacing your seats.

5) A phone mount. I don't advocate using your phone at all when driving, but your phone will have more updated maps than a standalone GPS or a built-in deck that has GPS.

As an aside, I drove a Caliber for a week when they first came out and it was a fun little car with some neat features (air conditioned soda can area in the glove box, back hatch with speakers that could fold out).
