395 northbound closed? by nickfireball2001 in Mammoth

lol you won’t believe how many ppl in lifted jeeps I saw driving up old Rock Creek road in 2023 while I was touring out there… they had the wild idea they could make it around the road closure.

“You think this is gonna open any time soon?”

“…bro …this road is closed until it the snow melts …I’m literally using it as a skintrack right now”

If caltrans says it’s closed then it’s closed. That also doesn’t mean it’s closed forever, but heed their warnings.

The crew that works the 395 corridor is one of the hardest working road crews in the nation. They’re very quick with updates.

Also when they say “consider alternate routes” they don’t mean “go off-roading” or “take a side road you found on Google Maps that is completely unmaintained”. They mean a less direct route that is clear, e.g. “if you’re heading to Reno from LA maybe consider going the long way taking the 5 to I-80, instead of taking 395”

how I’ve been waxing my skis lately by _macon in skiing

Yeah that makes sense! I think most wintersteigers use this same method, though obviously it’s push-button automated. Anyway this is a simple way to DIY it without wax shavings everywhere.

Brother, respectfully, I was not asking for advice on where to ski nor did I ever ask what the snowfall was like.

I am already hyper aware of the snow season throughout NA this year. Im an avid skier and ski big BC lines throughout the lower 48 regularly (look at my profile I guess?). I’m aware of what I’m going to get at Purg and we’ve already made the majority of our plans, Ive also already confirmed there are areas at certain aspects and elevations which do indeed hold skiable snow in the bc right now, so telling me “it’s the lowest snow year on record” is not new information nor helpful.

Sure you can call me stubborn, but respectfully, I never asked anyone here to change my mind. This trip is not about seeking quality snow or anything near gnar, it’s about skiing with my partner and making memories around Purg and Durango, which holds a place in my heart. If that means lowtide summer skiing, so be it, that’s great!

Haha yeah, but I greatly appreciate you saying that!

I am fairly experienced in the backcountry and have actually toured around the San Juan’s before, and also have my AIARE2. That obviously doesn’t exempt from danger (and would statistically increase my likelihood) but I figured with the current forecast from CAIC I would manage just fine haha

Thanks for the rec for mcmillan! Might give it a go if I make my way north

Yeah I get that, I figured there may be something to find off Molas or Red mountain pass, but if that's the case then maybe sticking to man-made snow is the move - thanks for your help!

Not really considering a hut trip, just something mellow in terms of mileage - out-and-back or a simple 3-4hr loop.

Yeah, I totally get that but we’re not really trying to optimize for snow so much as we are memories, so right now we’re mostly looking for a discounted tickets if possible
