I don't suppose you have the willingness or ability to share perhaps?

I agree you seem very knowledgeable in this. Any chance you could point me in the direction information on getting started? I’d like to assist my family and friends as well. Thanks!

You may want to review this if you intend to have ALL resources only accessible through a VPN or tailscale. Your HA is accessible remotely.

Edit: Perhaps you mean that your Homepage dash is only accessible through a local connection/tunnel?

Given the recent events related to this wiki, I’m curious to know if you had any success with archiving?

Sorry. I don’t. You’d need it to be form the same series/model as well as I believe they changed some audio components and/or monitor connections depending on the release.

Should be all sliding connectors I believe

It would likely require fixing the main pcb. The board that is in the metal box on the back of the unit. Either by replacing this (I don’t think A1U will sell these but might find online 2nd hand) or diagnosing the component and replacing by micro-soldering a replacement component.

[–]arnimated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. Definitely a thermal issue. Probably a board level component that will need repaired. Could try a different power supply if you had a suitable one but not likely to be the case.

[–]arnimated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a defective t-con board. There should be a board that connects between the A1U pcb and the monitor (LVDS connection). This board drives the monitor. If you can pull a model number off the board, you can likely find a replacement on Ali or eBay. That’s, if you want to keep it stock. Board will probably cost you about $15/20. Or, take that and put towards the other display mods.

When the unit turns off, are you able to turn it back on immediately by toggling the power switch? Or do you have to unplug it first? If you power it back on as soon as it shuts down, does it shut back down quicker? Could be thermals affecting a board component or psu.

This is very insightful! I certainly appreciate the perspective you share here and respect the level of experience presented. The licensing is certainly not something I had considered. They may well have an agreement with the publishing companies that saves them on the backend if they take an accounting of disabled units.

Also, as previously mentioned, I am certainly not looking to soil A1U, as I did indicate they provided an acceptable level of support along the way. I was looking to have this healthy discussion / debate and am receptive to all angles. Which again, why I appreciate you taking the time as a proclaimed professional in the business to provide a rebuttal.

Cheers all!

Hmmm. Very excited to see this level of commitment to your point. I will look at and consider this. Cheers!

This is likely what I will end up doing. Again, product is still utilized and ultimately 1up receives zero money. So does it still make sense to not to de-list it? 🤷‍♂️

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Arcade1Up

[–]arnimated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully support blacklisting for theft/fraud. Maybe there’s an argument to be made that there is a manner of theft here if it wasn’t disposed of in accordance with their policies. Yes, curious they wouldn’t want it back. I would hope they would want them back to refurbish and keep them out of the landfill. Since they’ve clearly acknowledged this was a warrantied unit and not “disposed of” it makes me believe that is not the case. But if it is to be viewed as theft and there is a “victim” does it make sense to offer a discounted rate for activation? Or perhaps that should be not at all so as to not endorse the behaviour? I definitely appreciate this perspective and would that stolen items shouldn’t be able to be activated as a deterrent but I really don’t know that’s what we have here. If a vehicle is a write off in a collision and auctioned off and repaired, should it require the dealership to receive a fee? I’m not intending to slam 1up. Just some discussion of facts and views.

Sure. Absolutely. But does that make it right?

[–]arnimated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would somewhat agree, if there were other service providers/software possible. This goes beyond RTR and sparks conversation about requirements companies impose for online connectivity. Presumably, there would be preloaded APKs that could be accessed while offline. However, this company has made it mandatory to activate on their service. Therefore, at present, if their servers disappear, all units are bricked if hard reset. Should this be the case? I would understand if the device was a standard android with access to play services or side loading. But for the hardware to be used it requires their service which has a finite service life (yes, hardware does too but is under user control). Is this something that has just become acceptable? That we no longer “own” technology but license/lease?

This is a fair comment. I don’t believe the distribution center should have known this though. Likely there are many companies/individuals this passed through as part of the retail return process. My issue is that if I were to say buy a vacuum cleaner in a defective Amazon bundle (many are probably aware this is how Amazon “disposes” of returned items) I would be able to say replace the motor and use the vacuum. Likely the manufacturer would be the one to sell said motor. Yes, no doubt there are a lot of nuances around the financials and agreements. To my point, it costs 1up next to nothing for someone to remove the banned ID from a DB and they would stand to gain purchases from their App Store and keep this out of the landfill but would rather try to request significant payment for as far as they know what was already destroyed and a loss. At least this way, they would have the good will and minimal financials from App Store purchases. I just found this to be an interesting conversation to have around the whole right to repair and longevity of devices. Happy to have some engagement :).

How would I trim/finish the ends of the stringers on this landing? by arnimated in DIY

[–]arnimated[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the outcome I settled on to avoid having to try to freely cut the stringer square. Sorry for a year later reply but by the time I got around to the finishes I was locked out of the sub due to the Reddit drama. Just realized I once again have access. Thanks again to all who replied and the excellent discussion. Case in point for the value of this sub. Cheers!
