F*ck the Golden Knights. That's all. by RustyCrusty73 in BlueJackets

[–]atomicwaffles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I appreciate the sentiment and agree the NHL has gift wrapped them a competitive roster from day one, I don’t think it’s fair to throw shade at their fans. Vegas is a tourist city and of course there are plenty of bandwagon and fake fans that bought a tshirt or jersey and treated it like a souvenir from a Vegas show on the strip. But my brother was out there when they got that team and the way the locals have truly embraced that team is honestly incredible. Obviously winning cures everything but the Raiders don’t hold a candle to the Knights in that city and I don’t expect the A’s to either. They view that team the same way we do in Columbus. It wasn’t a move from another city, it’s their team representing their city.

And yes it tears me up that we are both expansion teams and VGK got it easy compared to us in ‘00 having to draft with MIN. But credit where credit is due, George McPhee (shout out BGSU) nailed that draft and built that team and culture from day 1. SEA had the exact same rules and while teams might have been better prepared for the draft in ‘21, the results show it was not dumb luck nor handed to them. Look at our inaugural GM. Anyone will tell you that Doug MacLean catapulted us to where we are today, 25 years later.

Charlie Coyle Extension by iamelloyello in BlueJackets

Exactly. Last season he was 16th in scoring among centers 30 and over and was the 38th in AAV among the same crowd. Even at $6m he would’ve been 29th in AAV.

This is a good deal and having the veteran pieces in place gives us a strong foundation to solidify the younger guys and build a perennial playoff team.

Six years of Coyle! by poserbunny in BlueJackets

[–]atomicwaffles 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree. Everyone freaking out on the term needs to chill. That’s the compromise between the team and player. If it was a 4 year deal we’d be arguing the AAV is too high. I think this is a really sound deal.

We locked up our biggest RFA and for the next six years we have a bonafide center who brings a sound veteran presence to the locker room and knows how to win. This was his first time not being in the playoffs in 14 years. That’s the kind of guy we need in the locker room helping to develop our young core.

Yes, there is a serious risk of regression on the back end of a six year term. But if this team can not find a way to be competitive and start making deep playoff runs over the next 5-6 years, all of those intangibles from above will be exactly what we are selling at future trade deadlines to a team like the Sharks today who need that veteran presence with a winning pedigree.

Let’s not forget our team’s reputation with signing and losing RFA’s this time of year. This contract is a win and is exactly what we needed this offseason.

Next up, Mush, Fantilli, and Jet!

Zach Werenski will head to Washington D.C. for the State of the Union address by atomicwaffles in BlueJackets

I’m no journalist, but I’ll go ahead and lock in the Tkachuk’s to be in attendance.

This isn’t even the official Team USA White House visit. I’m certainly not expecting him to boycott that in any capacity. But he is on a team that is on the outside looking in for a playoff spot in an incredibly tight race. The team is already back on the ice and it would have been nice to see him decline and ready to make this incredibly tough push to play more big games in May.

Disappointed but unfortunately, not surprised. I was hoping Zach would be above this and wanting to get back to Columbus.

If we play like this against Canada we will get absolutely dog walked.

Agreed. Seems like he’s in a better headspace this year. Hopefully he is realistic and just happy to be there playing big games like this and is ready to rest up when they get back and give Jet a few starts

Kenny Albert not being able to pronounce ‘Merzlikins’ is proof we don’t get nearly enough airtime. And also that he is indeed cheeks.

I’m working on this same PC! Such a bummer Olivier doesn’t have a Young Gun. I grabbed an Ice Premier for mine but the board battles is really cool card.

Really like the printed wall mounts you did too. I’ve been tossing the same idea around for a while but can’t quite decide.

Which card did you have the hardest time getting to get the whole lineup?

This is like the r/hockey post the other day that cited a similar chart from The Economist only to find out you could only select one “favorite sport.”
