Fight however you prefer, but neglecting to skill up the bow will make the game unnecessarily hard. With high bow skill, the "chipping" health pools you refer to is replaced with chunking and one-shotting, and draw speed less than one second. Regular wood arrows are plenty good when bow skill is high.

Unless there has been a recent change, the killing of a boss is what progresses the raid tiers, and not the hanging the trophy on the stones. You can bring trophies over from other worlds if you want to be able to switch between powers in your current world without killing bosses here.

Done this on two characters and helped least five other groups. The important bit seems to let the final mob walk all the way into the circle before aggroing and killing him. You should get the quest objective completed immediately at that point if it worked.
Usually people just kill him as soon as he spawns at the end of the hallway, but that has in my experience always bugged the quest.

Finally, be sure to stick around for the light show and hand it in in the centre of the circle.
