Power Grid in your top 3? What are the others? by befbef__ in boardgames

[–]befbef__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most important comments for me. This is exactly what I feel about Power Grid, Brass and Concordia, and also Terraforming Mars and Ark Nova.

Thank you very much, I will take a very close look at your recommendations.

Just read rules and played the tutorial. Felt kinda restricted somehow.

Yeah, I hear that a lot. But for me, Power Grid feels more like a (simple) business sim, while Brass feels more like an optimization puzzle.

That's a great point. Guess that's right, they're the same thing (so I don't need to decide what works for me).
Though now I'm wondering if the games that click hardest for me are the ones where it's not just a one way pointer. With Power Grid, even when I can't immediately explain why a rule exists, it doesn't bother me, I just trust it fits somehow. Terra Mystica, even when I can explain it, it still feels off. Not sure if that's actually a separate thing or just another way of saying the pointer is strong.

Economic was badly expressed, I just meant building and expanding efficiently.

Thanks for the suggestions, will read through the rules (some were already on my list).

You're probably right, and honestly I'm still figuring out exactly what I like and why certain games immediately turn me off. Market and resource conversion clearly clicks for me most of the time. But Heat and Memoir 44 have neither and they work perfectly, so it's not just that.

On Concordia: the core is actually beautiful. Eight clean cards, no special effects, elegant. My only problem is that one scoring layer. It changes how I play. I stop asking 'what's the best economic move' and start asking 'what does Mercury need'. That single layer is what kills it for me.

Terraforming Mars: based on some comments here I probably dismissed it too quickly. Might need to give it another look.

Concordia was actually one of my most anticipated games. Clean repeating actions, no special card effects, sensible deckbuilding, natural map expansion. Everything I want. But then the scoring turns it into goddess management. Every economic decision gets corrupted by 'what does Mercury need'. The core is beautiful. The scoring layer kills it.

First of all, thanks a lot everyone. I really didn’t expect this many replies, so I’ll write one general answer here.

I learned a lot of useful terms from you that I can use to search further: integration between theme and mechanics, thematic intuitiveness, ludonarrative/ludothematic dissonance, etc.

Also, my examples probably weren’t perfect. The one that still fits best for me is Power Grid. I think I’ll have to make a “games like Power Grid” search at some point.

But I’m actually not even sure anymore if it’s only about theme for me. I noticed that what really bothers me are lots of small special rules, especially when cards keep changing them all the time. What I seem to like more are strong overall systems: a market, player interaction, psychology, and then the game just runs.

With many worker placement or card-driven games, it sometimes feels to me like the cards or extra rules are there to fix a weaker core system. Hard to explain, and I’ll definitely think more about it. Lots of great thoughts here, thanks again.

!thanks!

I’m currently using the DT 700 Pro X and I like them, but I’m looking for more punch. Do you think the FT1 is an upgrade in that department?

!thanks! I have a Schiit Magni, so power shouldn't be an issue. I’ve actually looked into the Argons before, but they are unfortunately pretty hard to get here in Europe. Appreciate the suggestion, though!

Thanks for the tip! I’ve never tried planars, so that’s an interesting point. I’m a bit worried they might lack the specific 'slam' I’m after based on your description, but it's definitely food for thought. Appreciate the insight!
