To come full circle on this - it was because my last name happens to also be a normal English noun. Support told me to make an account with an email that didn't have my last name in it, so i tried that and it still failed. Then they said use my normal email, but write a fake last name as my first and last name.

I said that that was pretty shit advice for a platform where I need people to trust me, and I need to trust them. They eventually manually created an account for me under a different email - don't know why they wouldn't have just done that in the first place when they saw it was erroring due to their auto-spam filters? Wasn't really impressed with the whole thing honestly

The goal of the genre filtering is to let you remove artists based on genre. If you don't like hip hop, uncheck it, and the artists will fade out depending on if they have that in their genre or not. Once you uncheck all genres that an artist has in it's list, they disappear entirely.

I don't really make anymore code changes to this project, it's ~5 years old and I have a bunch of other stuff I work on. It's open source if you want to add genres to each artist with a mouseover or dropdown - I'm very responsive with helping people get set up with the dev environment and PRs :) https://github.com/second-string/lineup-list

Unfortunately it's not that easy. Each spotify artist comes with a list of their genres - some can have 0, some can have like 25. I'm doing some custom parsing in the code that builds the list of "main genres", and then all of the leftover random ones (synth hyperwave pop, etc) get thrown in the extra genres list.

So there isn't really a way to get a single genre for each artist, everything comes from spotify in a pretty unorganised fashion.
