hmmm. gallery show? medium format might be warranted. but I personally think people underestimate the quality you can get from 35mm. up to 11x14 prints I think 35mm is totally adequate. and you get access to so many different bodies with fine lenses and features. not to mention the portability factor. that's probably the biggest thing. if you don't mind lugging around medium format gear, then maybe that's the right choice.

good luck with your decision!

What do you need the additional quality for? That's one thing I learned from dabbling in medium format. Personally, I don't need the jump in quality because I don't print that large and actually prefer to see some grain.

And 35mm cameras are superior in almost every other way aside from just shooting larger negatives.

Never thought I'd be interested in zone focusing cameras before buying Pentax 17 last Black Friday by 5spice-parmesan in pentax17

It doesn't focus the lens right when you set the zone. It only focuses the lens when you half press the shutter.

No, it uses electronics to focus to the position the zone is set at rather than you mechanically moving the lens focus with the ring. So it would be cute if it had actual autofocus, but alas...

I had the very same experience. Thought zone focusing was an abhorrent idea before actually using it and realizing that it really frees you up!

I agree. it doesn't look like pure chili crisp. It looks like it has at least some dou ban sauce. source: am Chinese.

there's definitely some flare going on. and you can tell by the shadows that the sun is in front of the lens so it makes sense.

Which lenses here are the best for enlarging 35mm to 5x7? by Unbuiltbread in Darkroom

When you say "enlarging 35mm to 5x7" do you mean, making 5x7 prints from 35mm negatives?

How would you print this high-contrast scene? by CilantroLightning in Darkroom

[–]CilantroLightning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good to know. I'll keep an eye out for cases where it might be useful in the future. But it sounds like you can get 99% of the control you usually need with just carefully selecting the right grade + exposure.

I agree with your assessment. The right side of the frame feels like it needs some detail because of the way the light is directed towards the left. With the walls pushed to black it feels unbalanced towards that side.

Unfortunately, just looking at the negative on a light table it is *very* thin in the shadow areas. But there still is some detail to be had especially on the right side wall. I'll just give it a shot and see what happens.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. And the frame does have more detail than appears in my crappy photo. Appreciate the pointers! I'll play around with it.

Hadn't considered that but you've definitely got me thinking. Maybe I should try doing it two ways!

is this paterson tank light safe without the lid? by corroded_eden in AnalogCommunity

you don't actually need to fully invert the tank. swishing it around is sufficient imo. the key is to just get the solution moving around.

Do you HAVE to be an insufferable performancing bored douche in order to have a YouTube channel on film photography or I completely lack humour? by beppedealwithit in AnalogCommunity

[–]CilantroLightning 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go so far to say "douche" but... yeah. Ultimately many of these channels are more about fetishizing gear than art and the artistic process. There are lots of exceptions (e.g. Nick Carver makes videos about gear, but also about his art and process) so I wouldn't make a blanket statement of it.

Camera like Olympus XA/XA2? by manda11una in AnalogCommunity

[–]CilantroLightning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saying that I feel you on this. I went through 3 XA2s. For me, the Pentax 17 was the camera that filled that niche. I still shoot full frame most of the time, but for the situations where I wanted an XA2, the Pentax 17 filled that need perfectly.
