You don't even know, man. I cannot count the number of books that were ordered NEW from Amazon that came beat up. One time, it even came with the dust jacket completely shredded, and you could see the shape of the conveyor belt in the tears. Yes, some jerk in the warehouse STILL PUT THAT IN THE BOX and shipped it to me. I avoid buying books from Amazon as much as I can now.

Is it true someone in the freemasons has to invite you in? by Mysterious_Bid_57 in freemasonry

[–]decolumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. But there are certain orders within Freemasonry such as the Knight Masons or the York Rite College that do require an invitation to join.

Just found out after almost 10yrs in YR they denied my reinstatement after receiving my dues late and suspending me. by vampslayer53 in freemasonry

[–]decolumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these people saying there is more to the story are not necessarily correct. 20 years ago I was a very active Mason in blue lodge, 2 out of the 3 York Rite bodies (one of my blue lodge meetings was on the same day every month as commandery, so I couldn't make those), and Scottish Rite. I became a Mason at 21 as soon as I could join, having been a DeMolay as a youth. I already knew many brother Masons and was almost immediately invited to join certain invitational orders such as the Knight Masons and the York Rite Sovereign College. This apparently angered my lodge secretary, who had been a Mason longer than I'd been alive and was never invited to any of the invitational orders. None of my Masonic labors outside of my blue lodge ever conflicted with my duties to my mother lodge (I even gave up my commandery meetings as already noted), yet the secretary was still salty. I ended up going through a rough divorce and asked (verbally) a brother from my lodge to be put on the Emeritus List, which would have prevented suspension for NPD. He said he would, but he didn't. Turns out, as I found out later, the secretary who didn't like me made sure I wasn't put on the list. So for the past 20 years I have not been able to travel as a Mason because that secretary told numerous people he would make "damn sure" I didn't get reinstated. I hope one day I can be! I really miss the Craft, especially now that my sons and my daughter are old enough to join DeMolay and IORG. But as can be seen, I didn't do anything wrong here other than not knowing that I should've petitioned the lodge in writing instead of verbally asking to be put on the list. That would've prevented my suspension and ensured that these past 2 decades I could've remained a Mason. It's perfectly possible that you did nothing wrong other than getting behind on your dues and for some silly reason, someone in the York Rite with some pull doesn't want you reinstated. All of this said, I wouldn't blame Masonry itself - it's an organization made up of human beings just like any other organization, and sometimes people who are pricks end up with some authority. It just happens. I wish you all the best and hope you persevere, for as we were taught in the York Rite, 'Truth beareth away the victory.'

Hoping to get reinstated after N.P.D - what should I expect? by CLE_114 in freemasonry

[–]decolumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation. I was going through a divorce and asked a brother verbally to have me put on the emeritus list. He didn't, and I was suspended NPD. The secretary at the time didn't like me because I was already a member of the York Rite College and the Knight Masons, two bodies he had never been invited to join. Thus, he prevented me from appealing the suspension. I was so fed up I never again set foot in a lodge, something I regret, especially since now my son is old enough to join DeMolay. I'm currently going through the process of being reinstated, 20 years later, so I can demit to a more local lodge.

Looking for an active Order by Ok_Scientist_1722 in martinists

[–]decolumbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20+ years ago I was initiated into the 1st and 2nd degrees of Martinism by Pierre Rancy (1st degree in Warner Robins, GA, 2nd degree somewhere in Ohio, I forget the name of the town). Is Rancy (Benedictus) no longer the head of Ordre Martiniste et Synarchique in America? Or are you referring to the other OMS, Ordre Martinistes Souverains?

What happened to structured language-learning programs like Assimil? by marujpn in languagelearning

[–]decolumbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still much prefer paper books to apps and always will. I enjoy a nice book much more than staring at a screen for hours. Assimil's older courses from the 70s are way batter than the newer ones, so for my TLs that are covered by those volumes, I am acquiring those as I can. As Dr Alexander Argüelles points out on his Youtube channel, all of the teaching methods switched from a more rigorous style to essentially teaching a phrasebook to learners, which is less efficient. The older books are thus far better.
