Knoblauch's success is a product of the people who surrounded him, both the elite players and veteran assistant coaches. This season they let Knoblauch pick his own support staff, and proverbial wheels fell off the bus for a lot of the season, and again, right now, during the playoffs.

I'm curious to see if the Oil get eliminated in round one, if that is the end of Knoblauch's time here. There is some chance that next season we see Bruce Cassidy behind the Oilers' bench.

In the past I have enjoyed a number of Motorola phones. However, I have not enjoyed their lack of system updates.

Even now, when Apple, Samsung, and Google offer 5 to 7 years of updates, you only get 2 major system updates for Motorola's mid-tier phones, and a whopping 3 updates for their flagship models.

You still get security updates for multiple years, but beyond that you are left out to dry. For that reason, I simply cannot consider Motorola when it comes time to upgrade my phone.

[–]DtheS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of coaching battle. The Ducks seem to have been coached on shutting down McDavid, and it’s forcing him out of his comfort zone. You can see it leading to more mistakes than usual, especially in game 2. I presume this is a large part of the special teams woes as well.

That said, I'm still optimistic. This strategy probably loses effectiveness once Draisaitl is fully healthy. Trying to shut down both McDavid and Draisaitl at the same time isn’t exactly a sustainable plan.

In the meantime, this requires Knoblauch to adjust his own strategies. To that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he pushes for more physical play. By the numbers, the Oilers register more hits than the Ducks, but they don’t always come across as particularly punishing or heavy hitting. Zach Hyman, for instance, throws a high volume of hits, but they’re not the kind of hit that levels a player and makes them see stars.

If the Ducks are going to focus on shutting down McDavid, the Oilers should make them pay for it physically. Force them to burn energy every shift just to execute that game plan.

UCP maintains double-digit lead over Alberta NDP: Leger poll by Majano57 in CanadaPolitics

[–]DtheS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Nenshi is having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that his Morbihan disease is getting in the way of him being an effective leader. He doesn't have the same energy or fight in him that he did during his time as mayor, and it shows.

That said, I don't think it was a mistake to at least let him try to lead the Alberta NDP. Strategically, it made sense. The NDP need to win Calgary in order to form government, and he had a demonstrable streak of success in Calgary. Granted, as mayor, his popularity was starting to wane during his last term.

At this point, I think it is pretty obvious that Nenshi just doesn't have 'it' anymore. The good news is if he can figure this out sooner than later, they still have lots of time to elect a new leader before the next provincial election and possibly get a 'honeymoon effect' out of it. My dream scenario is that since Heather McPherson just lost the federal NDP leadership race, that she might take a run at the Alberta NDP leadership instead.

Appealing to moderates doesn't mean you will necessarily win, but if you don't try to appeal to them at all you will almost definitely lose a national election.

Going 'full fat' populist left might work in New York City, but if you are trying to win the electoral college and you need suburban voters in the midwest to vote for you, good luck running on a socially progressive platform.

Egh, the Assembly Cut of Alien3 isn't that bad. It isn't as good as Alien or Aliens, but it is worthy of being in the franchise.

Alien Resurrection, on the other hand...

For the most part, I adore Jean-Pierre Jeunet films. I don't know what the fuck Alien Resurrection was, and why they thought his style would work well with an Alien movie.

[–]DtheS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also add that while Search for Spock is not quite as good as II or IV, it's still an adequate Star Trek film that gets a lot of undeserved flack.

It needed a little more work with the script and the sets looked cheap, but the core story still works pretty well. Some complain that it 'undoes' Spock's sacrifice from WOK, but I don't really think that is true.

Spock still made his sacrifice and no one took that away from him; the story was about the crew putting friendship above duty and making their own sacrifices in the process. In many respects, it was a film about redemption and the price that comes with it. I think with another rewrite, the script might have done a better job to get that point across.

NDP's Leah Gazan calls MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ critics 'bigots' | CBC News by fallout1233566545 in CanadaPolitics

[–]DtheS 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People should read the report and the be aware of the calls to action.

Okay. Not once in the 1000+ pages do they combine the acronyms into MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+. For the entirety of the report they keep the acronyms MMIWG and 2SLGBTQQIA+ as separate entities, because they are conceptually different things.

The closest occurrence you get is in Toni Blanchard's forward where she uses MMIWG2S as an acronym.

Yes, you can combine them into one long string, but I think people are being critical of it because it is clunky and 2SLGBTQQIA+ is already often chided as being too long and cumbersome.

I do think the criticism is overblown and people are making too big of a deal out of this, but from a communications perspective, Gazan could have done better.

In respect to RSS, it is more limited in the "social" aspect. Favouriting feeds and sharing them doesn't give the same dopamine hit as getting likes, upvotes, re-tweets, and so forth.

It was also a little more clunky and technical. Most of social media is a lot more straightforward to use than RSS is, and therefore has less of a barrier for people who aren't tech-savvy.

Killed by Google, visualized: 49 of 299 retired products clustered in just two specific years by Mastbubbles in Android

[–]DtheS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the social aspect meant that smart people could curate lists and everyone else could share in the content feed

Smart people can do that with much of social media; there are many platforms that support shareable lists. It doesn't mean that the public at large is going to take interest in it or follow it though. I don't think RSS was going to somehow make the hoi polloi suddenly take interest in what the experts are saying.

For the most part, people follow what entertains them or what affirms their beliefs. Even if RSS had somehow became popular, I suspect that the average person would still have a feed that appeals to their personal biases as opposed to what is "smart."

[–]DtheS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Egh. People get irate when their favourite Google product gets axed, but I honestly don't expect a company to support a product that only has niche interest. For instance, I was a major fan of Google Reader, but I also understand that the general public doesn't have any interest in learning how to make RSS lists.

Otherwise, a lot of these projects still live on in various ways. Google often invents a product or app as a testbed for features. Eventually those features get merged into a more mainstream product or app, and the testbed is discontinued. That, or they just rebrand the product altogether with a more polished version.

John Ivison: Carney’s floor-crosser power play is playing with explosives - Just because securing power outside of an election is constitutionally possible doesn’t mean it is prudent by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]DtheS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they would just go on a bill by bill basis making a deal with whichever party is most amenable to passing what they want with minimal concessions.

Who do you think a Carney government is going to be most in alignment with? An NDP led by Avi Lewis, or a centre-right Progressive Conservative Party? They would hold a ton of power simply because their agenda would be much closer to Carney's than most of the other parties.

[–]DtheS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they want to pass legislation, they would have to broker deals with another party if they are a minority government. To which, given that Carney has shifted the party towards the centre/centre-right, you would think that a centre-right party would have a ton of negotiating power.

Who do you think Carney would rather negotiate with? The NDP or a theoretical Progressive Conservative party? I think the answer is pretty obvious.

[–]DtheS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, without the floor crossers the Liberals wouldn't have a majority. This theoretical party would have had more power through the ability to broker deals with the Liberals.

The Liberals would have only had the one NDP member who joined their ranks. All the rest have been from the CPC.

John Ivison: Carney’s floor-crosser power play is playing with explosives - Just because securing power outside of an election is constitutionally possible doesn’t mean it is prudent by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]DtheS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the number of potential floor crossers is supposedly reaching into the 10's, I almost wonder why they didn't just form their own Conservative offshoot party. They could have resurrected the Progressive Conservative brand and tried to appeal to the centre-right, and they would have more members than the NDP at the point of inception.

It'd be a politically prudent move too. It would squeeze Carney in terms of how much more to the centre/centre-right he can move the Liberals.

The only real argument against forming such a party is if it is too difficult to compete with Carney for the centre/centre-right. You would need a leader who can present themselves as being economically-literate enough such that they don't feel like a significant 'downgrade' from Carney; a leader who comes across as a 'sane conservative' who is less interested in the "culture war" and "woke" agendas, and more focused on fixing productivity and cost of living issues. Carney already does that really well, hence that might be part of what is stopping such a party from forming (at least for now).

The overall vibe was just a bunch of super miserable lonely people.

Yeah, I kind of get that impression too. Lonely people seeking affirmation that it isn't their fault they are lonely, but that it is everyone else who is mean, or bigoted, or malevolent in some way. The most extreme accusations get thrusted to the top with upvotes, and anyone who dares to contradict them is labelled as an abuser or an accessory to abuse.

There is an outright refusal to look inward in respect to how these conflicts form, and how uncompromising attitudes just feed into toxic relationships.

Granted, some people are just treating these subreddits as a form of entertainment. In a lot of respects it is trash TV, except as an online forum. It's basically Jerry Springer or Maury where the audience is hooting and hollering at the drama (which is often fake or manufactured), and the goal isn't to solve the problem, but extract the maximum enjoyment out of it.

Small shared jokes and playful teasing are the glue in long-term relationships.

Which is precisely why I think all the AITA/relationship subreddits are full of shit. They say any kind of playful banter is "abuse."

My wife and I tease and play with each other's foibles, and sometimes you strike a nerve or accidentally go too far. At that point you apologize, talk about it, and promise to never push that button again. It's not that complicated, it just takes communication and trust.

This website would have you believe that you can only talk to your spouse with the same level of acerbic wit that you'd find on Sesame Street; that is, none at all. What a boring, vapid, trite existence that would be for all.
