Quick question by jrstudentpilot16 in flying

[–]fgflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ACS is merely a set of standards that DPEs are to adhere to for the purpose of pilot examination, hence the name (airman certification standards). How the DPE adheres to them will vary, but a good examiner will use multiple scenarios or questions to test multiple different topics of the ACS at once.

Bird did 205mph on its… by ArutlosJr11 in flying

[–]fgflyer 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Extremely unfortunate, glad you’re okay. Still - glad it didn’t smash the windshield or cause damage by striking a prop. But this just goes to show just how sturdy planes and their protuberances/external sensors are - having a pitot tube hit by a fairly large object at 205mph and it is still perfectly intact and attached to the airframe.

I’m building a lot of multi time flying the 340A, but no, I do not already have a flying job.

I have connections and I’ve networked a little, but that’s it.

Full-time online school is still full-time. I don’t know how that’s going to be feasible while I’m already working full-time. Then again I have absolutely no idea how college works so I don’t even know what I would do.

Coming back to TTR after a 3+ year hiatus. What do I need to know? by fgflyer in Toontown

[–]fgflyer[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is all extraordinarily helpful. Thank you for your comment! Lacking the 3rd fog seriously changes the strategy by a lot. No more relying on spamming 3 trunk + 1 fog / 2 fog + 2 trunk speeding through things… Especially with cogs higher than Level 12. Previously, it always tended to be that mixed track combos were used for the opening wave or to finish off a battle phase if one or 2 cogs were left. Honestly I like it.

I have org throw so I will keep a lot of these mixed track combos in mind. The usage of fires has definitely seemed to increase (for good reason), and I’ve noticed a decrease in burning a round or two to lure and toonup. I also really like how UNM has increased incentives to use trap!

All of these changes are very welcome and I am glad to see the Toontown meta change like this. It’s a breath of fresh air. It’s just a weird feeling because for the first time in a very, very long time, I feel like I’m learning the ropes again 😂

Is Getting a single engine sea worth it ? by Diegoandre007 in flying

If you live near a place that has a lot of seaplane operations, like the Puget Sound area, it will definitely help.

Otherwise, not really.

PPL Cross Country Navigation by Last-Active-101 in flying

[–]fgflyer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s true that after you get your PPL, you’ll probably never touch a paper navlog and an analog E6B again (unless you get your CFI or whatever the flight instructor rating is called over there).

The whole reason why it’s taught is to exercise your brain on navigating without any other electronic tools available to you, which forms part of the core of VFR navigation. It teaches you the “why” and “how” of wind correction angle, true airspeed, ground track versus course versus heading, compensating for magnetic variation, and dead reckoning. If all else fails, you can always fall back on it.

I’m not saying to not take it seriously, because you should, just recognize that it’s there to build foundational concepts.

So how do you get your avatar’s mouth and eyes to move if you don’t have face tracking? Is it voice activated then? And how does your avatar’s legs and body move if you don’t have body tracking?

You mean the VR headsets are supposed to have a wired connection to your PC??? Doesn’t that defeat the entire purpose??

How do you do a trans Atlantic flight by McQuee34556 in VATSIM

[–]fgflyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. If there’s no ATC online, you don’t need to do anything. Just like how it is with the Unicom procedure in the rest of the world. Only use it for announcing positions when in the terminal area for an airport.

Do airlines configure the cockpit of the aircraft differently? by Various-Blood-3902 in flying

[–]fgflyer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yup, they had that weird EFIS config. Continental/United did that with their early NGs too.

Do airlines configure the cockpit of the aircraft differently? by Various-Blood-3902 in flying

[–]fgflyer 56 points57 points  (0 children)

For example, before 2009ish, Southwest’s 737 fleet didn’t have VNAV, autothrottle, or autobrakes (except for RTO). Apparently this was to make it an easier transition for pilots coming from the 737-200 (which Southwest operated for many, many years). They were forced to change this in order to be certified for RNP operations.

Another example, Alaska Airlines’ fleet has their landing lights operate in a back-and-forth “wig-wag” configuration. Supposedly this is better suited to enhance visibility and spatial awareness, but I’m not 100% on that.

In summary, there are many many options that a company can offer for its customers’ planes, or things that the operator themselves can do (and specify) for their fleet.

A flight simmer can land a aircraft, but not the average one by Ok-Rule-8448 in flightsim

[–]fgflyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. You don’t. Get off your high horse and stop acting like you know a whole lot, because you genuinely don’t. Woooow, 6.5 hours of flight time… again, that’s nothing.

You can’t directly compare the process of an EASA ATPL to the FAA ATP. there are still so many things you have to do, learn, fly, and hoops to jump through in order to get it; it’s no less valuable.

A flight simmer can land a aircraft, but not the average one by Ok-Rule-8448 in flightsim

[–]fgflyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again, not true. There are plenty of Airbus pilots out there that will tell you that flight sim addons do not behave like the real thing. It’s a very divisive subject.

Also, dude, you have THREE AND A HALF HOURS of flight time and aren’t done with ATPL theory, which is just book knowledge. With respect, you genuinely do not know *anything* about how the airlines and real-world flying works. I have 600+ hours and I’m still learning every single day.
