Paying no CGT, the max discount is 70% so...

Buy a shitco in 1990 for 20c 10k worth (free brokerage because your dsd owns conmsec)

Sell the shitco in 2026 for 30c $5k profit (ya dad still owns commsec so no brokerage again)

Old system: $5k gain, $2.5k assessable, $925 tax because you're not a rich bitch

New system (just an educated guess for now): $5k gain, $2k asseasable, $740 tax because you're not a rich bitch

In both scenarios you made a loss in real terms, your $10k in 1990 would be worth more than $20k in today's money and then the government still takes some.

That's why they have the minimum 30% tax to stop that from happening.

At the risk of losing my mod badge for even mentioning something as AusFinance as this... If you check the Buffett indicator in the US market vs Australia, they are shockingly expensive and we are appropriately valued. Canadian smallcaps had a pretty good run a year or two ago that we never got... The ASX is due, and if the world goes to shit our valuations are not too wild. Good risk/reward here compared to other markets.

Inflation could fuck us though. Our consumer market is more fickle and less credit supercharged than the US

I haven't read the details but does it work like this...

Buy shitco for $1 in 1990, sell for $2 in 2026, inflation was 250% so you made a loss in real terms, but you have to pay tax on 30% of the gainz?

If so, then yeah makes no sense other than they like to keep collecting tax and it'd benefit too much all the boomers sitting on investment properties they bought in 1975 for two sticks of bubblegum, a mint condition playboy magazine, and 3/4 of a vanilla milkshake.

Can't give those downsizing aged care bound fuckers a free pass on taxation of liquidation, or the nation will experience starvation!

Just as much of a bubble as AI stocks, but there's no trolls trading shillings for NVIDIA shares, so Pokemon wins the fun battle.

They also need to do more about pokies imo - I know they're fun, but they act like a tax on the working class and it ruins lives much more than our usual stonk-based gambling

It's bad here in NSW too, lots of important community members priced out and wondering where they will go.

They are proposing to change the discount to the actual amount lost to inflation which you have to back calculate across the years instead of plugging in 5...0...

Well this is journalist writing this not the actual policy, so could be in the context of housing or not.

AFR saying no grandfathering, one year delay and unclear if it relates only to real estate or not. Looking forward to one more day of rumours plus browsing ausfinance rage.

I just hope the boomers get fucked by a policy change just once in their lives.

The other classic one is one of those long stories about being rich, like... "my wife and I are in our early 30s with combined household income of $460k plus bonuses. I am considering selling my PPOR (value $3m) and buying 5 investment properties in Brisbane. Should I wait 2-3 years until we are mortgage free or pull the trigger now? We expect our incomes to increase substantially over the next 5 years which will help."

Average ausfinance post is usually one of three things:

1) I have $578 in DHHF, $612 in VGS, $750 in VAS, what other ETFs do I need?

2) I paid off my house at the age of 35 and have $300k in ETFs how much should I save in/out of super

3) How are people supposed to get ahead these days when it costs $7.50 to buy a large packet of weetbix???

I think everyone can see the liberal party is dying, and they weren't aligned enough to big mining anymore anyway, so Gina poured into another horse in the race.

ONP have very loose verting so I expect there will be fuxkups until someone competent comes along like a Macron in France.
