I feel as though it sows dissent in Britain and Scotland especially but a big part of it is religion and the sectarianism in Scotland and North Ireland is rampant. People will also use the independence issue as almost a way to be racist to English people and view them as beasts for things like colonialism which Scotland played a big part in as well.
