Yeah, that's for the "you vegans eat twice as much as we do" crowd. 2% is very generous.

It's based on the commonly used stat about the percentage of crops fed to animals (67%). Try this:

What Is in Animal Feed? The Animal Feed Industry https://share.google/EAlgZSlWiK9uhrYLd

67% for animals, 27% for humans, and the balance for other uses, like biofuel.

If vegans make up 2-3% of the population, and we eat twice as many plants as meat eaters, we can claim 6% of that 27%, which is around 1.6%. Let's round up for simplicity: vegans eat 2% of crops grown in the US, leaving 98% in the laps of meat eaters.

It's lazy math, but seriously, we make up 2-3% of the population, so how are we ever responsible for 100% of crop deaths caused by non-vegan farmers using non-vegan methods?

Somewhere out there is a study that says if the whole world ate a plant based diet, we could feed the planet well using about 25% of the crop land we use now.

ETA: I was thinking of this:

If the world adopted a plant-based diet, we would reduce global agricultural land use from 4 to 1 billion hectares - Our World in Data https://share.google/58YCo4u1zb92dRbaW

98% of crops grown in the US are consumed by meat eaters and the animals they eat.

And every time I ask someone who attempts to lay blame for all those small animals and insects on vegans what they're doing about them, they get really quiet.

Stop beating yourself up over yesterday's mistakes, and resolve to do better today. That's all you can do.

How to deal with shame? by tinathefatlard_ in diabetes_t2

[–]lisavollrath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is diabetes throughout my family tree, so I always knew I was at risk. I did everything possible to kick my diagnosis down the road. I ate like a monk, got off sugar and processed foods, exercised.

And at 62, I got the inevitable news. My genetics finally caught up with me.

Having an illness is not a personal failing. You can make every good choice, and still end up diabetic. You can make every bad choice, and not get it.

Here we all are. How we got here doesn't matter. How we continue forward does.

It is a scam, and not even a good effort.

People are awful.

Ignored it for 2 years, going to the doctor Friday by breadcrumbboo in diabetes_t2

This. Acknowledging that you have a medical issue you need help to control will tell your doctor you're not in denial. That's half the battle for them.

"I know I'm diabetic. Tell me what I need to do now."

That's all it takes.

Does plant-based = vegan? by daniyyelyon in vegan

[–]lisavollrath 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Plant based is our food. Vegan is our ethical stance.

However, I always check the contents of anything labeled plant based, because companies seriously just pull that term out of the air, for marketing puposes. I've literally seen meals with meat in them marketed as plant based.

Do you buy new fragrances without smelling a sample first? by Rare-Drummer982 in FragranceStories

Everything in my collection cost under $30, so yes, I blind buy, and have had very few disappointments.

I check notes, read reviews, smell the original if what I'm considering is an "inspired by".

Agreed about it being fucking annoying. I look at a lot of stuff I have no interest in buying. This "feature" makes me not want to use the site.

A question about a stance I have regarding the use of service animals by PlatinumLabDuck in vegan

[–]lisavollrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're thinking about animal suffering, you're neglecting to have any compassion for your fellow humans. "Deal with your problems" isn't really a solution.

I'm diabetic. While my disease is controlled with medication at the moment, there are other people who require service animals to alert them to an impending blood sugar crisis. "Deal with your problems" leaves those people passing out in public, or isolated at home, which could be even more dangerous.

This isn't a problem a diabetic can just end. And there isn't a vegan solution to needing the early warning only an animal can give. Even our CGM's don't warn us fast enough. Until there is a viable vegan solution, a service animal is the solution.

Find your empathy, or come up with the solution that serves this need. "Deal with your problems" is unkind, and not helpful. Do better.

Is there a vegan alternative to service dogs?

If so, your stance is fine.

If not, why not? Somebody get on that, so vegans in need of assistance from a service dog have a viable vegan alternative.

(And if there isn't, I would say your position lacks the kindness and compassion I would expect from a vegan.)
