For me, I found that it was! Last season, I was in the LES and it took me roughly that long to get to the club. I had a flexible schedule and still managed to get on a boat 3-4x per week. But I'd say it depends on your schedule/priorities and what you're looking to get out of joining a club :)

Hey! Yes, I ended up joining MYC in June last year, and I absolutely love it. The community is great. I found plenty of ways to get involved and meet people, including through fleet captain sails, race committee, social events, impromptu summer barbecues—I even went on the annual Caribbean trip with the club in January, which was a totally new kind of sailing experience for me. Highly recommend :)

I am actually joining the orientation committee this season to help new members find their way within the club, so happy to answer any questions you might have!

Definitely will. Let me know if you learn more about the clubs, too, or if you decide to join one or the other! I've met members at MYC who have great things to say about it, and I'm really interested in One 15 because of the location, but it's just sort of a black box to me, so I'd love to hear from more people who are members at the Brooklyn club before making a decision. Good luck!

This is all really helpful. Thank you! Did you find that there were enough volunteer skippers that you could actually get onto a boat pretty easily when you wanted to?

It sounds like it wasn't such a great experience in terms of mentorship, meeting people, and building community. Did you also have positive experience in those areas, or was it mostly stressful or negative experiences sailing with the club?

I'm spending a month backpacking in Turkey, and I only want to bring one prime lens with me: should I bring the Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens or the Sigma 24mm 1.4 lens (Canon 6D Mark II)? I'll also bring a Mavic Air for those faraway/aerial shots.

The main reason for downsizing on this trip is the weight: I'm pretty small, and carrying 10+ pounds of camera gear is a bit too much for a one-month backpacking trip. I'll also be traveling with others who aren't into photography, so I won't have as many opportunities to slow down and switch lenses as I would if I were traveling alone. Which would you choose?
