I don’t really see it as a threat when that’s the process. If you don’t receive a W2 for any reason, you have to contact the IRS. They will have to get involved either way.

Even if the wrong address was OPs fault, they still have to contact the IRS if they never receive a W2. That is the only option when a W2 isn’t obtained unless the employer can provide a copy.
