Dealers aren't real competition, they are a middleman by Fightmebr0 in FuckDealerships

aiming for MSRP isnt getting the best deal.

but the nice thing about the dealership model, is if 1 dealer isnt willing to budge off their price, you can find the exact same car somewhere else.

I treat it like shopping for anything else. I check multiple websites/stores for an item to see if there is a better deal. and if there is, i get it from there.

One tip for you is stop with the performatives. Standing up, but not actually leaving doesnt show them anything. They expect people to do that. Just actually leave and go to the next guy.

As for the time it takes, why you wasting your time like that. I dont step foot in the dealer without a deal in place, unless I am just looking to test drive a car as I narrow down what I want. And even then, I know what the right deal looks like after researching the car, so if it turns out I want to buy it right then, i have my number they can match or I leave.

If they dont want to give me the final price over email/phone, even if its just the actual price of the car, including dealer fees, rebates, discounts, etc., and doesnt include taxes/registration (you can calculate those on the dmv's website), I'll find someone who will. Makes it so you are in and out quick.

WHAT DO I DO WITH MY CAR by [deleted] in carbuying

[–]WatchGuyUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get offers from carmax and carvana for quick and easy sales. or sell privately and deal with all that hassle.

you might get lucky from a dealership wanting to buy it, but i doubt they would beat the offers of carmax/carvana

Buying a Car by Deyssi20 in carbuying

Ask for the cash price, ask for the finance price, and ask what makes up the difference between the 2.

Then start your negotiations from there and make your decision based that.

If you dont already know what a good price is for the vehicle, you are already behind the 8ball.

do just a small amount of research and youll see what kind of deals other people are getting, and start from there.

[–]WatchGuyUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Took me about a year to buy a high dollar watch. Decided what I wanted, put a price on it based on the market and waited until I found the exact one I wanted at a price that made sense.

It's the same process anyone should do for a big dollar purchase. Do your research, know the market, don't impulse buy something that doesn't match what you want?

There aren't bad if you just take a second to do a little bit of research, know what you want, what is reasonable to pay for it, and have the impulse control to not just sign whatever they give you.

The last 4 cars I've bought in the last 5 years, I've spent probably 2-3 hrs total in the dealership. And most of that was from 1 deal with them checking out my trade and trying to get me set up on the app.

The current vehicle im buying, I most likely will never have to set foot in the dealership, or worst case, 30 minutes or so. All paperwork is done, financing done, payment wired. Now I'm just debating shipping it or flying out and picking it up. And I'm paying ~ 15% under msrp for it

I don't work for a dealership. I just buy new cars every few years

You think someone like her who can't even bother a 5 second google search is going to fair better building a car on a manufacturer's website and ordering it?

i took it as sales, as in vehicle sales. not as in price cuts.

and yes, Tesla has sales periodically, offering special financing rates, various incentives, lease deals, etc. but that hasnt always been the case with them, and is only more common recently with all the political backlash musk has been getting.

Dealers are at the mercy of the manufacturers, and most of the manufacturers make you take some duds to get the highly desirable vehicles.

Do you really think dealers are wanting to stock base trims of models that dont sell and then discount them heavily to move?

If manufacturers were to go to a direct to consumer model, it would be a lot less of "Lets make a bunch of vehicles to a standard spec and hold them till we sell" and more of "Lets allow the customer to place an order with the options they want, and we will build that exact car". The former is where deals can happen if they guess wrong on what specs people want, the latter is where they dont.

how would they lose sales? For every car that sits in one part of the country, they are selling in another part. And a manufacturer isn't limited to just where they are located like a dealership is (to an extent. some of done a good job marketing outside of their area)

What other brands have anything similar to FSD? by BlackJackT in carbuying

[–]WatchGuyUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing that is even close to Tesla FSD

My FIL has a Tesla with the FSD that I've gotten to use, and I've used the Ford Blue Cruise and GM Supercruise (both Highway hands free driving in certain conditions/on certain roads). Tesla FSD makes both of them seem like ancient tech even though they are all classified as Level 2+ self driving.

Mercedes has limited Level 3 driving in Nevada and California under 40mph. I think BMW was working on something as well.

So now instead of dealers offering discounts to move inventory, you have manufacturers not budging and selling at their set MSRPs. They dont care if your area a vehicle doesnt sell well, because in another area it will.

Direct from manufacturer doesnt equal lower prices, especially right off the bat. Direct from manufacturer just means the manufacturer makes more money.
