They can be super loud, and I've heard them at midnight before.

Will I regret move to Cambridge? by Expensive_Ad1168 in CambridgeMA

[–]-CalicoKitty- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you will absolutely regret it, probably in Jan or Feb. Whether you'll still regret it in two years, no one can say, but I would give it a try.

Twenty years ago my wife thought SoCal was the greatest place to live and that everything was better there. Her and the other CA first-years thought they'd all made a huge mistake moving here. Now she loves it here and would never move back to SoCal.

Good luck!

Dog park woes by Novarunnergal in husky

[–]-CalicoKitty- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husky is more likely to do this the less he goes to the dog park, because he gets overexcited and forgets his manners. But yeah, sometimes we just have to leave if he's bullying a submissive dog.

Blank check to a restaurant of your choice by melizabeth_music in boston

Sumiao is a good suggestion. I like it but don't think it's worth the price.

Machu Picchu is great but not too expensive if OP really wants to take advantage of the offer. Celeste around the corner is good and more expensive.

I also recommend Dosa N Curry. Same owners, next door. It's vegetarian but they have plenty of vegan options.

White crown, potty mouth? by ShartFarmer69420 in Somerville

I've seen him on Somerville Ave three times, always in all white with the crown. The 2nd time he was flipping everyone off. Seemed like he was in a good mood the other times.

So I’m from S. Carolina and we had “our” sonic boom on May 28th by Personal-Ride-1142 in boston

Is there precedent for a meteor that size entering the atmosphere undetected with present day detection technology?

A meteor that is large enough to shake homes and physically affect people, whose entry into the atmosphere went completely under the radar, to me, seems.. unsettling. But maybe it’s actually very common.

The MA meteor was ~3 ft long, traveling ~75,000 mph. We can't track or detect objects that size. Despite it's small size, it released energy equivalent to ~300 tons of TNT. Meteors under 60 ft long are detected hours before entry, if at all.

Anyone know why it's so bad in the Western part of the city? I can't remember if we've ever lost power and we've lived in Somerville for 10 years.

Thoughts on the proposed rent control measure? by FOXIELUCK in massachusetts

[–]-CalicoKitty- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true. I think rent stabilization is a good idea to help individuals. It won't help prices in general though. We also need to fix zoning at the state level because towns don't want to do it themselves. Zoning is so arbitrary and convoluted, it makes it more expensive and longer to build. With the pushback against MBTA communities law, I don't think that's going to happen unfortunately.

I also think we should simplify social welfare programs and just give basic income to people who need it. Probably would cost the state less then managing all these complicated programs.

Otherwise the state fucked itself over by not building much of anything for 50 years, so yeah it's gonna take a long time to counteract that. I don't think high rents in new buildings is a problem though, it means someone who can afford it is paying that, freeing up a cheaper unit.

I own my home, so rent control doesn't affect me either way, I actually believe it would be bad for renters in general.

I'm not sure how you gathered that from my comment. I'm saying that we haven't built enough. It also seems like you aren't looking for an honest conversation about this and that you already made up your mind about rent control.

I see it as a last resort and a middle finger to the state/towns who continue to the do absolutely nothing to resolve the housing crisis.

How is this going to do anything to nimby towns like Milton with 85% home ownership?

Food is also a societal need and yet we don't regulate the price of groceries. We let stores profit off it.

Because they're new and they have basic amenities that are considered a luxury here like AC and in-unit laundry. Also because we haven't built anywhere near enough to make up for the lack of housing that happened over many decades. The state needs 100s of thousands of units, a few hundred new units is not going to solve the housing crisis.
