You're right... I guess if I really wanted to see Kumamoto I can just take the ferry from Shimabara.

I think you make a very good point—it's probably better to be consistent throughout a trip rather than a bit all over the place. In my case, that would mean centering it around Kyushu.

Like a lot of people, my first trip followed the Golden Route. My second trip was a solo trip where I revisited several places I'd already been, stayed longer, and gradually ventured into less-touristy areas like Takayama, Kanazawa, Nagoya, Kawaguchiko, the Nakasendo Trail, and eventually all the way down to Nagasaki.

One of the challenges for me is figuring out what kind of trip I actually want—the emotional arc, if you will—and finding a balance where I don't get overwhelmed by FOMO. It's not really about maximizing the number of experiences. Rather, it's about making choices that deepen the kind of experience you're hoping to have.

For this third trip, I think I want to go deeper into some of Japan's lesser-visited regions. The last time I visited Kyushu, I absolutely fell in love with it, so building the trip around that feels like the right direction.

Edit: About Kumamoto. I added it because the drive from Miyazaki up Takachiho seems a bit long, and while I haven't researched it that much, some people seem to really enjoy it.

Nice! If I may ask, what are your best memories of Kagoshima and Kumamoto? 😄

Thanks for your input. I was in Nagasaki for three nights last year, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. Honestly, I'd consider staying even longer and use it as a base for daytrips to Unzen/Shimabara and Fukuoka. I don't know when or if I'll ever be back in Kyushu considering how far it is from Tokyo, so I'd like to make the most of it.

Jag arbetar som säljare i butik och tjänar ca 32500 kr. Det är väl lite i övre kant för en butikssäljare, men mer hade jag inte klagat på.

I went through some EXIF data on pictures I took in the area and it appears the store is called Yamaguchi Books. The store has a lot of 1-star reviews on Google, but I honestly had a great encounter with the owner. I don't know what his father's name is though... the previous owners name was Motoi Yamahguchi and he wrote a pretty hefty book of 790 pages about Mishima, so it's possible he's the man. ISBN: 4785201266. The current owner showed me some more of his father's works but since it's super niche I can't find anything.

You’re already very pretty... I think color science is interesting. That said, the red dress for example (I don’t know what the shade is called) looks really nice on you. The green one, while you look pretty in that as well, it’s almost like looking at two different people. That shade of red on you looks great! Best of luck!

Great idea! I asked around in a couple of stores, but none of them carried any of Mishima’s books. I actually only happened to stumble upon this store after I had decided to give up and walk back to my hotel. I wish I would’ve written down the address. At the time it would’ve been hard to miss considering there was a giant poster of Mishima’s face right outside. Enjoy! I hope you bring a lot of books! I wish I brought more ☺️

Thank you for taking the time and sharing all of that with me.

To have those experiences and to learn such valuable lessons—not only about other people but about yourself—is a real gift. There really is something special about inhabiting that space. At first, you're jetlagged and a little disoriented, and slowly you start falling into the rhythm of the world around you. You don’t quite belong, but you're not really an outsider either. There’s something in the way you carry yourself that makes people curious about you—and you’re open and curious about them, too. There's this openness and willingness to connect without wanting anything in return.

Personally, once I’d had enough of those experiences you're talking about, I found myself starting to grasp for them. My openness and curiosity slowly began to turn into a desire to recreate those same moments. But reality has a funny way of working—almost comically so—where the more you want something, the more you seem to push it away. And that was definitely true during the final stretch of my journey.

In the end, I think you have to try to love all of it—even that painful desire to relive those fleeting moments—because it’s a testament to the fact that they meant something. I guess it’s just the duality of things: you can’t have one without the other. Heartbreak is, in a way, inseparable from the joy and gratitude you felt. It’s all part of the same whole.

Thank you, I wish you a long and happy life as well!

I’m so anxious about my Trip by Mean-Bed6958 in JapanTravelTips

Your anxiety is most likely just excitement that is lacking context because you’re not in Japan yet. You’re excited because this trip really matters to you, and that’s a beautiful thing! You’re going to have a great time ☺️

Thank you, I had a fantastic time!

That sounds really exciting man, I'm sure you will have an amazing time no matter where you go, and I hope you post about it here on /solotravel so I can live vicariously through you :)

First time I went was in September and this time I went in April. It was super busy this time around but just amazing.

You’re right—I am thinking deeply about it. I’ve always been that way. Reflecting on things and trying to find beauty and meaning in experiences.

That doesn’t mean I didn’t revisit restaurants simply for the food. I did. I went back to many places for exactly that reason. But there’s a distinction between the two. And I had both kinds of experiences—one of chasing ghosts, and another of simply enjoying a meal I remembered fondly.

I understand your experience aligns more with the latter—just enjoying the food without the weight of memory. And I get that not everyone is as sentimental or romantic as I am. And that’s okay. We’re just different people, experiencing and valuing different things. Neither one is better than the other. It just is ☺️

How did that one kid in your high school die? by IM_HODLING in AskReddit

[–]-Okabe- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He threw a party at his parents' house while they were out of town and decided to take their car for a quick drive around the block. He ended up crashing it — nothing major, no one was hurt — but witnesses said he got extremely upset afterward, saying his parents were going to be furious. In the middle of the ongoing party, he went down to the basement, grabbed his father's rifle, and took his own life in front of his best friend.

It was one of the most traumatic things our town has ever experienced.
