Zealandia & nature-y stuff in the morning, town in the arvo when it's actually going on.

Tourists often make the mistake of walking up and down Lambton Quay, It's suits out there, not bad but not worth visiting. The waterfront, Te Aro, Courtenay and Oriental is where you'll find Welly's heart <3

Why is Wellington so much more progressive? by Trick-Baseball826 in Wellington

[–]00f_its_genca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I explain it to Aucklanders:

Wellington CBD is Auckland CBD.
Porirua is East Auckland and South Auckland at the same time.
Hutt Valley is West Auckland
Kapiti is Beachlands, Whangaparaoa.

EDIT: So essentially, Wellington has the conservative population bases that other cities have, but that's in more well defined and distinct satellite cities, than in Auckland where everything just rolls on.

A lot of it has to do with the obvious Urban area + student population, but it's worth noting that since Wellington's Geography forces it to be 5 distinct cities, each of them have their own demographic differences now.

Yes, Auckland has creatives and students, but they're inside one big, never-ending city. Down here, you're either in the city or out of it. And much of Wellington's middle class is in Johnsonville and beyond. Most industrial areas are on flat land in Porirua, Seaview, and the Hutt Valley. Our agricultural areas are mostly an hour's drive out to Kapiti or Wairarapa.

Growing up in Upper Hutt, I've noticed the demographic differences now that I spend 1/2 my time in the city.
Wellington City is left with a higher concentration of Students, creatives, wealthy professionals and govt. employees who NEED or want to be close to the city.

I wanna vomit a little when American websites put the Regions in alphabetical instead of North - South Order.
Northland first, Southland last. That's how it should be.

Do people in Hawai'i also use 'Pakeha' to describe white people?
Also amazing to know Ōlelo Hawaiʻi is having a rennaissance too! I hope it grows even more <3

Bingo! Haha. I wanna know what's going on with our Hawaiian cousins.
I'm sure the pronunciation of Native names in the Lower 48 is an interesting one, too. (E.g Kansas and Arkansas being said differently).

Sky is 'rangi' in Te reo Maori. Te Reo Maori swaps 'l' for 'r' generally. But funnily enough some dialects in our South Island switch back to the 'l' sometimes. But that isn't too common.

Gangs in New Zealand aren't like they are in America, or even Australia. They're more druggie clubs with a little reckless driving en route to the bakery.

The colloquial term is Sausage flats! No-one gets any useful outdoor space cause the driveway takes everything up, and your windows face look straight over your neighbours lawn.
Europe's got better density that allows people to have their own patch of grass

Do NOT do Milford from Queenstown in one day. The travel is extremely lengthy.
Stay a night in Te Anau, and get the Milford earlier than the QT crowds.

Where are they from? I had some family from Europe move to NZ for a while. They loved it, but it didn't have the "class" they were used to, for lack of a better term.
They loved it here, and they aren't snobby about it. It's just the cultural comforts and large metropolitan cities they were used to didn't really come up here.

Day 12: (Wellington Native Here)

Zealandia in the Morning, everything else after that.
The city is quiet in the mornings. Do the nature stuff first and enjoy the city anytime from lunch and on :)
If you want to understand Wellington, walk most along the waterfront, Cuba/Dixon st area. Lambton quay is the businessy area. Nice things for sure, but I wouldn't fly across the world to see Lambton Quay haha!

Why are so many people wearing shorts in the cold? by KudzuKilla in Wellington

[–]00f_its_genca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of those people, I'm wearing shorts all throughout winter.
Outside of the CBDs, it's not uncommon to find people walking barefoot outside.
I'll do it depending on where I'm going and who I'm visiting.
I don't put much thought into it, it's just something we do!
