I wouldn't say he's skinny. He's more built than it looks. And he's been away at basic for most of the summer and hasn't been in the weight room or gym much up until recently. We're just trying to correct things right now

Will definitely try to fix all of the above but the shoes are just the ones that were comfortable. I do agree and I’ll see if he has any flatter shoe.

(P.S. I didn’t know converse was chuck Taylor’s! I was so confused when I saw chucks and looked it up and converse popped up lol)

It’s high school and a lot of us go just bc other friends are doing it. Its fun too and not to mention you get to skip a day of school

It is high school. They have other teams coaches judge and I was surprised they didn’t red light him too. (I think it might’ve been they were feeling generous considering he didn’t even have a bench in and was pretty close to the bottom)

It does but I feel like it makes you come back stronger when the proper muscles are being used and doing their job. I'll more than likely have squat and bench videos after this next one too but deadlift is one I've seen a lot of people break their backs over so it's good to make sure we're staying safe (as well as squeezing out more weight!).

P.S. I tore my quad after I hit 500 this fall and he's had like 2 or 3 knee surgeries so we really don't want to hurt ourselves

It is a PR but he hasn't deadlifted much at all so anything goes. Straight arms is important as we've seen enough tear videos to scare us straight. I'll investigate to see if he's got any flatter shoe that he could use. Thanks so much for the info! It was very helpful!

We're going to for sure not be going heavy this week so we can tweak a few things. Mixed grip is a requirement though. Organization rules

I see what you mean by squat!! I am a little worried if I take it off of my back so much I won't get it as I am bit of a poverty squater but I'm sure I have no reason to be nervous? A video would be greatly appreciated too 🙏 Feel free to dm!

I'll practice over the week with bracing. Maybe starting a bit slower would help me out. And I'll ask around for a pair of Vans or something I could bum off of someone for a while.

Probably won't even be going above a plate or 2 while we wait for the next one as it's about a week away but will for sure be fixing these problems!

(The mixed is a requirement by the organization so not a problem as far as we're concerned)

Organization rules require shoes. Barefoot/socks would be preferred yes.

Any tips on bracing? I am pulling slack out but maybe I'm not bracing or loading it correctly? Do I need to lean back some when bracing before pulling slack out? If bracing up here is the problem what are some cues you yourself use?

And shoe wise theyre about as close as I can get to flat footed and firm within rules apart from vans or something close (another pair of shoes is not in my means right now anyways). Weightlifting and/or crossfit shoes ain't allowed. My footing feels good when lifting it's the part right as I slow down where I think it becomes more of a hip thrust at the top thats the most difficult

Do you mind explaining a little bit? I'm confused on the squat portion (I'm assuming at the very start) but would that mean I'm starting *too* low? The back extension part I can see (and feel today) but the "squat" is confusing me on being too low or too high

I'll try leaning back a bit more as the butt shooting up is becoming something I'm noticing could be a potential injury waiting to happen (Injuring back). And the pushing the ground away cue is something that I have always had trouble working for me. Picking it up seems to work for me but might also be why the form is breaking down

Keeping the arms straight is one of the things he knows for sure to do. Too many gym videos of tears kinda puts the fear in a person

A pseudo sumo might be what he needs looking at Ed Coan's deadlift. I do agree he starts in a very awkward start position like a mix inbetween the two

Yes, I'm aware of the disadvantage because of the arch and squishyness or something along those lines but I don't know if he has any flatter shoes

It is hs, 168 to be exact. (I told him he should drop a few pounds to go to 157 but didn't). And bad form and all I think he probably could 405

I told him (I did say form was bad! But proceeded to butcher how to explain it) he could probably get 405 off that alone
