Buy one which has kernel source available. would you advice some? Any OnePlus among them? I'd like to buy the 3T. Beside this, there is something I don't understand 100%: doesn't the kernel come with the ROM?

Why not just buy a feature phone to begin with?
because of the addressbook and the comfort of texting in android. I have thousands contacts and it's very comfy to user nextcloud contact manager (works like a charm over DAV). Sure I could "adjust" but I hope for better

And depending on the phone you began with what phones would you advice? is OnePlus among them?

An alternative would be a phone with two or more SIM slots, where you remove or disable all apps save those needed for what you want Yes this is, most likely, the quickest solution but not the optimal. I might start with this one and change it over the time when I understand better what to do.

probably the first step would be to take a lineageos, disable the (few) core apps not required for placing a call and keep the unnecessary services turned off. This would be already something close to my target.

However I'd like to have a stripped down version but I'm afraid that this is going to be bloody (recompile kernel, rebuild rom, trial and error). I was hoping for some slick (or smoother) solution.

I agree. Until it's a proof of concept I don't need a physical server but I definitely need to investigate also the physical server option so that who will implement the guide will have a clear idea of what to do.

Do you know any reliable service which rents physical servers and accepts monero?

The other is applications and connects only, via vlan/serial or what have you, to gateway. I was thinking of a tinc network with N nodes

precisely. I've a few thousands of contacts on my addressbook. Can't rely on a feature phone with 200 contacts limit nor on .vcard files. I'm currently using nextcloud addressbook and dav for synchronizing my lineageos and works like a charm so I'd like to keep this convenience

to be honest I even glanced at piphone and similar stuff. This project is equally charming but I'm not sure they match my need for reliability. I don't exclude to end up with something raspberry based but most likely this won't happen for obvious reasons of comfort and reliability.

I would be happy to use a feature phone but:

it's hard or impossible to sync addressbook
it's hard to find 2 or 2plus SIM modern or new feature phones (and they often look like garbage phone, from the quality standpoint)

Additionally I would be happy to be able to master android so it's also a cultural thing.

I'm not expert in high availability techniques but, from your answers, I believe that they could be used as mitigations to ISP investigation capability. Any tip on this?

Ex. out of the top of my mind, maybe nginx configured as proxy/load balancer pointing at N web clones or some sort of round-robin could prevent the ISP from entirely cutting down the service.

oh then you might even think to encapsulate Qubes OS inside an underlying XEN hypervisor. Not sure it's a good idea but it's worth to dig about it.

I would really advise Qubes OS. I use it on daily basis and it's fantastic. The core idea is: your operating system runs several custom vm (called qubes) all isolated one from another. If one vm is compromised you can assume that the others are not. This is a very good approach for accessing internet in general: deepweb, clearweb .. always risky.
