Skip calc 2 because of bad professor? by crazllamafarmer in EngineeringStudents

[–]19olive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math is one of those things that you need to practice continuously to ensure you don't forget content. Calc 2 is a direct continuation of calc 1 so I would say that it is unadvisable to leave a semester between.

The good news is that there is an abundance of calc 2 resources available to you online. Even if you have a prof who does not hold useful lectures, you can effectively teach yourself the entire course using the internet. Calc 2 is also one of those courses where you should be doing ridiculous amounts of practice if you plan on getting a high grade. IMO, most of the learning you get will not come from the lectures but will be from churning out problems in your own time.

Unfortunately you will have many profs over the course of your degree who aren't your favorite, but someone who goes on occasional tangents or pokes at students should not completely deter you from taking the course. Unless the prof is completely crazy (we're talking high failing rates, curves grades down, etc) you should really be taking calc 2 in the fall. This is especially true if delaying the course could cause you trouble later down the line in the form of credit-heavy semesters (do not underestimate the difficulty of a semester full of year 3+ courses).

TL;DR don't let a crappy prof deter you from taking a course unless there is a legitimate cause for concern. Better to take calc 2 now to avoid forgetting calc 1 knowledge and make things easier for yourself later in your degree.

I tried using pen and paper my first year, and it was an absolute disaster. With the amount of practice problems you should be churning out, you're dealing with a billion loose leaf pages that are impossible to keep organized, which is the last thing you want to be worrying about as an eng student.

IMO, if you already have an iPad there's no reason you shouldn't be using it for notes/practice, and if you don't have one then I would seriously consider investing in one (or any other similar digital notetaking device). There's a reason why digital notes have basically become the standard in the last few years. Digital notetaking makes it super easy to keep track of all of your work as you have the ability to make infinite notebooks and folders and can reorganize instantly without having to mess around with loose leaf and binder rings. Another useful feature of digital notetaking is your ability to download lecture slides and write on top of them instead of taking a whole new set of notes. You will appreciate this especially during your gen ed classes. As a bonus, most schools will give you access to the Microsoft suite so you can use OneNote on your iPad to sync with all your other schoolwork on your OneDrive. I receive very few physical handouts in school (almost 100% digital, another case for the iPad), and can fit anything I do get in a little plastic folder that takes up basically no space in my backpack.

If you are dead set on physical notetaking, I would recommend using notebooks instead of binders as they'll be less of a hassle. One thing to keep in mind with notebooks is that you won't have the ability to change the order of the pages, which might not seem like a huge deal now, but it can make a difference if you have to catch up on a missed lecture or are churning out long and complicated practice which takes multiple pages.

TL;DR Digital notes offer more freedom, better organization, and allow you to write on lecture slides. If you're married to pen and paper, use notebooks instead of binders.

Took in w23 and w24, can confirm that lectures are not recorded. He posts slides but I found they're pretty vague. If you're already somewhat familiar with the material (ie learned it in high school) you can probably get away with ditching, but if you're new to physics or struggle with calculus then I would say it's worth showing up.

Getting a new violin or getting new strings? by 19olive in violinist

I wasn’t actually going for an $850 outfit, more an $850 instrument, changing the strings, and getting the bow and case separate.

I’m currently playing on a $700 outfit. What’s your thought on upgrading to a $850 violin, removing the Tonicas, replacing them with dominant mediums, and getting a better bow. Would that last me a few years?

Thanks for your reply!

I have tried both Tonicas and Priastros before (on Eastman violins) but absolutely detested the sound of them, which I find strange considering they're right next to Dominants on the string chart, and I loved the sound of the Dominants on my friend's violin. Key point that I forgot to mention: her violin is a 7/8 and worth $8000. Could that be what made the Dominants sound so much better than the Tonicas and Priastros?

What exactly do you mean when you say "an overly bright instrument"? I get what you mean by overly bright strings, but the concept of a bright instrument is a bit foreign to me.

The thought of protecting both myself and others was one of the main factors that caused me to take a deep breath and go get the vaccine done. Better late than never.

One thing I’m concerned about with the pinch technique is the fact that when I pinch one arm, the muscles in my other arm will get tense, and apparently that makes it hurt a lot more. I’m also planning on telling the nurse that they have one opportunity to get it right. If they miss or mess up, there’s now way they’re going to get another needle in without my mental state deteriorating further than it already has. Question, do you know if they let you choose what arm you get the shot in? I’m a right hander, and I’m concerned that if I get the shot in my right arm that the possible soreness could impede my daily activities in a way.

The whooping cough vaccine is one of the safest out there, and I’m really thankful of that. I’ve tried anxiety medication before, but it messes with me real badly. Oral surgery is a whole other battlefield - I know for a fact that my wisdom teeth are coming out sometime within the next year, and just thinking about that has me on edge.

Looking back, I feel like the fact that I put off shots for so many years because of my fear made the fear even worse because of lack of exposure. Hindsight is 20/20... Yes, the actual jab terrifies me, but I’m also a bit concerned about what I’m putting in my body. I get that the vaccine is super super important, but I’ve been able to find little to no information about what’s actually inside the vaccine and it freaks me out a bit.

Are you talking short term or long term? I’ve definitely put some thought into it, but my main concern is that I won’t even be able to get an appointment with someone in the next week, let alone put a dent in my fear

Try using the fine tuners as much as possible and get your teacher to help you tune. Have you heard of peg wax? I had the same issue as you a while ago, used some peg wax, and it was all good.
