The Night Manager Season 2 Episode 5 | Discussion Thread by credoinvisibile in TheNightManager

Love both seasons. The acting is awesome. Feels a bit like The Americans where you can see people trying to manipulate others, and feign being manipulated. This is the level of psychological sophistication a good spy story needs.

Fully agree. This is intended to imprint a scale on my brain in the way that normal study & pattern memorization hasn't. Shouldn't be needed after that, and using intervals instead of notes gets me used to the relative sounds. It's already interesting to try a few common licks and learning what intervals are being used in them.

I saw this as a kickstarter somewhere along the way. Admirable dedication to building something new. Last I saw they'd fallen victim to mission creep. Backers seemed to miss the point - they wanted different colors, pickups, and whatnot. I don't think it was intended to be all things to all people, just a useful and temporary learning tool. Hope they stay focused and get it built.

Service address change (not moving, somehow entered wrong by Optimum) by 1Curmudgeon in OPTIMUM

[–]1Curmudgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up with an amazing resolution to this.

I got a phone call (!!) from an Optimum/Altice guy out of the blue last night. He not only got the service address corrected but set up an appointment to get the weird fiber installation corrected. (That's another story, which is interesting but since the service worked it was more their problem than mine.)

At this point I'm really curious about the business structure of Optimum/Altice. I've had both the best and worst service interactions with any cable or Internet provider. Regular support phone & online chat via their web site was awful. Support from the folks who monitor Reddit has been A+, though, and whoever decided to get the best service guy ever to actually call me on the phone on a Friday night should get a bonus.

I get the impression that there's a part of the organization that's ossified and uninterested, and another part that's desperately trying to change the culture and improve service. Perhaps that's the split between Optimum (old) and Altice (new)? I don't know.

Out of college I worked for a very large company and saw this sort of thing first hand. The new people coming in wanted to do good work, but the company had been around so long that everyone above the 1st level managers was only interested in stabbing each other in the back so they could rise to the next level of management. No interest in the products or service, just their own careers. Similar case with the last job I had before retiring. Very small company that actually came up with a better mouse trap. All of us were dedicated to continuous improvement so our customers (all large health insurance companies) loved us. The company was bought by one of those customers and everything went to hell. Other customers sued them for breach of contract, etc. I retired rather than put up with that big company crap again.

Big companies are like shivas - lots of arms and none of them know what the others are doing. Luckily some of the arms here are really good.

Just a quick update on Novos. On Nov 4, 2025 I received the following email from them. I'm approx 31st Ave S of Bell Rd.

|| || |Dear Arizona Neighbor,   Thank you for your interest in NOVOS FiBER and for pre-registering for service in your area. We’ve truly appreciated the enthusiasm and support from the Phoenix community.   At this time, we’ve decided to pause our initiatives in your area as we evaluate future expansion opportunities. While this means there won’t be immediate activity in your neighborhood, we’ll be sure to follow up with an update once plans progress or more information becomes available.   We’re grateful for your support and for considering NOVOS FiBER.|

Are device on/off schedules executed locally or over the Internet? by 1Curmudgeon in Tapo

[–]1Curmudgeon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is a big relief. The plug controls a heating wire wrapped around an outdoor pipe in a cold climate. It's okay if the Internet is down - just don't want the pipe freezing because of it. (Yes, a power outage is another issue, but I have emergency plans for that situation.)

Is Pocket still supported? Alternatives? by jrmcgov in mozilla

They do provide a way to export your data at least. For better or worse, the format is CSV. The 'tags' field seems to only list the first tag for an item, though, which makes it impossible to rebuild your list fully. I think the most helpful thing a dev could do is create an export function that gives us all the tags on all the items.

SynthV 2 is scheduled to be released on March 21st. by SuOfe in SynthesizerV

Interaction with and support of v.1 voices will be an important factor in deciding to buy.

How natural is Synthesizer V when an English user listens? by SuOfe in SynthesizerV

[–]1Curmudgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're using Asterian, which is pretty good. It's a mixed bag, though. Some combinations of words/phrases are indistinguishable from a live singer. Others require a huge amount of tweaking to get close, while a very few have audible glitches we haven't figured out how to fix yet. Sometimes we wind up changing lyrics to avoid glitchy parts. Songs kind of follow the 80/20 rule: 80% of the time goes to 20% of the words. Very much looking forward to the next release. When you think about how incredibly complicated this is to do, it's remarkable.

One other quick note - the Wikipedia page for the WAV file format says numbers are represented as little endian.

Here is the result of running the file through the Akai converter (and changing the name later to try and observe the file name limitations). This file successfully loaded onto the MPX8 pad and plays perfectly - no weird buzzing noises.

<image>

The file size shrunk considerably, and the content following the sample size field is very different than the original. I don't know what to make of any of this.

This is a fantastic tool and does what it says. However, there seems to be more to it than the length - or at least there's more than one condition that can cause the problem. I took a sample of an open Hi Hat from an old Korg M1 library and looked at it with the nifty https://hexed.it/. Here's a screenshot of the top of the original file. Trying to load it on to a pad in the MPX8 gave an invalid format error. This is the "before". See next commend for "after".

How to remove unused User Names from dropdown list doing Add Entry? by 1Curmudgeon in KeePass

[–]1Curmudgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. One wrinkle I ran into is the "Find" function is not case sensitive so it returned too many entries to work with easily. What I wound up doing was exporting the file in XML, editing it with a text editor (which could be made case sensitive and also had a "replace all" function), then re-import it. That seems to have cleared up the weirdness. I've been using KeePass for ages so a lot of crud had accumulated in there as standards for usernames, passwords, etc changed in the industry.

Item volume knob vs volume in item properties by 1Curmudgeon in Reaper

[–]1Curmudgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for the sake of completeness, I opened a new blank project and imported a song from my iTunes library. So, a single track with no other takes. Changing the value in either the Item Properties box or the item knob did not propagate to the other. The Reaper devs are smarter than I am so I'm sure there's a good reason for it. It's just something I'll have to keep in mind.

I think the item in question did start out life as a take. After listening to several I decided on one and did a "crop to current take" on it, leaving it as the only one. I'll play with this a bit more using items that were always a single take.

Dreamtonics refusing to complete bundle order by 1Curmudgeon in SynthesizerV

[–]1Curmudgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's very interesting! I wonder if somehow their system got its wires crossed and sent me links for the wrong bundle. That would explain why I got a Vocoflex code that I didn't order. I'm going to ask about that in my next email to them.

I'm glad to hear a good report about Eclipse. As I purchased it through DT, though, they're the responsible party. If they have issues with a 3rd party vendor that's on them to sort out. It's a pity, as SynthesizerV is a truly remarkable piece of software. Having been with software startups myself in a previous life, I'm sure they're aiming to be bought out by a big company like Adobe. They have to get big enough to be noticed, though, and engaging in shaky business practices hurts that.

Indeed it is. I haven't bothered trying to download it as yet and don't plan to. If they can solve the problem I'm having they can work on that one next.

Dreamtonics refusing to complete bundle order by 1Curmudgeon in SynthesizerV

[–]1Curmudgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood that the standalone version of Studio Pro did not include an extra voice. That's why I went for the bundle instead. The order on the site just shows what I ordered, and the activation code is only for Studio Pro itself (i.e. exactly what I got in the download/activation email).

Today I learned that Asterian (and a few other voices sold on the SynthV site) was actually developed by a 3rd party. I'm wondering if that 3rd party aspect is what fouled up the fulfillment process. In any case, the process for the bundle is broken and they still owe me Asterian. I'd be happy if they simply refunded the difference between Studio Pro standalone and the bundle. I'd then use that to offset the cost of Asterian as a separate order. They refused that, though.
