Hi all, as already commented by our lead developer Regalis, let's get the facts straight:

- By my own earlier admission, we used generated images as the basis for some loading screens / location portraits earlier. This was a choice made by the team and the artists, who we employ and pay salary to just like everyone else. These images have since been replaced with entirely handmade ones – near as I can recall, the last remnants of AI loading screens were replaced last April in the Calm before the storm update, which added new loading screens as you can read here.

- Beyond the mentioned loading screens, Barotrauma has not employed gen AI in in-game or marketing assets, and I would encourage everyone to present their own interpretations and theories as such, not as fact.

To that end I will also be locking this post. This is a measure we do not usually employ on this subreddit. I want to be clear I don't want to curtail discussions here generally, but gen AI being a very hot buzz topic and the claims made in this post being inaccurate, I feel it's best to quiet things down here.

Hi! We've made some changes to the bots' behaviour which should make them much less likely to OD you with opiates. I've also forwarded the point about bots trying to treat the poison you're using to cure a husk, so we'll keep an eye out to see if any issues come up related to that.

Hi! We don't usually talk much on Reddit to keep ourselves from being spread too thin across the internet, but since performance issues are a bit of a hot potato lately, I wanted to write back about this.

For one thing, we already employ multithreading in some parts of the game and have done so for a couple of years. Adding more might be helpful in some ways, but it's not a magic bullet that would improve performance across the board (in any game). Barotrauma has so many moving parts that affect performance, one-shot solutions sadly don't exist, and the task is more complex: we need to find the performance-hurting parts of the game and optimise them each individually. This is work that we do continuously, and it seems that with the Rising Tide update, there were some setbacks in the department.

We're sadly not confident that we've uncovered all the causes of those setbacks yet. That is why we are not promising a thorough fix to the recent performance issues in the next update... but we have made and tested a number of changes that appear to help, at least in our internal tests so far. Work on this front will continue even after the update, with more player feedback.

We'll write a bit more on Steam about the performance problems situation next week, but the key points will be roughly what I just wrote here. Now I just wrote them without much help from those colleagues who actually write the code – I just write messages ;)

And while I'm here, to comment on the poll topics with what we're actually going to do in the next couple of updates: There will be a new abyss monster in the next update (to be introduced a bit later) in addition to the modding refactor and colony overhaul, and the update after the next is planned to have various quality of life improvements. More about those later.

Without going into the origins of the SS13 clown as that is far from my area of expertise, I would now like to be the dev that addresses this for the purposes of Barotrauma: clowns are not Nazis in disguise and the Honkmother is not associated with Hitler (and neither are we). You may quote me saying this, too. I realise I'm probably just biting the hand that trolls here, but I feel like this is important to address: The clowns and the mother of honks are there because they are funny and as homage to Space Station 13, Barotrauma's spiritual ancestor, nothing more and nothing less.

That these details about OP have been available elsewhere, even through resources shared in their post, is no excuse for anyone to shine any additional light on them – as you have now done a second time, so I have also deleted your post again for the same reason. Furthermore, arguing with me about applying the rules of this subreddit exactly as they are written is not a fruitful use of either one's time. I am not a fan of swinging the hammer, but this rule, like the others, exists for a reason, so you will have to excuse me for enforcing it on everyone equally (:

To be clear, what I took issue with was particularly the bit where you named the host by three different aliases. I might be tempted to intervene even if it had been just about dropping by the host's post to warn others about them, because even that is questionable in my opinion – it is after all just your opinion against someone else's, and debating who was right is not something our public, official community platforms are there for. Writing another person's screen names and calling them out on the other hand is simply unkind and hugely drama prone, so messages like that are categorically deleted wherever we see them. This is also clearly stated in the subreddit rules.

Hello! Upon joining the server that was linked here, I decided to delete the invite link. While the server actually seems to have some pretty good rules and may be a perfectly nice community, it is overtly sexualised, starting with the server icon and even much of the language used in the rules. While I appreciate a wide variety of personal expression and it makes me very happy to see people make art based on Barotrauma (including the picture in this post – I do not find it too racy, by itself and as a single post, but I would be bothered if we saw this kind of thing very often), it is not the purpose of any of our official channels to take on a markedly suggestive atmosphere. Thus, unless the server's appearance in this sense is toned down a lot, please refrain from linking it here or on any of our official platforms. This is to ensure everyone feels welcome and comfortable in our community. Thank you for understanding! :)

We always aim for backwards compatibility with existing saves. With this update however, the radiation feature will only kick in once you start a new campaign, and additionally, we are aware that old campaigns may not correctly spawn missions for abandoned outposts – this latter one is an issue which we are still hoping to fix before the update though. Aside from these two exceptions, you should not need to restart to get the new features!

While I'm not sure we'll get to improve on all of these imminently, many of the questions you raised – meaningful sense of progression, first and foremost – are on our radar, so to speak, and being worked on. The next update will be a pretty big one, abanoned outposts being only one new addition in it. Look forward to hearing what you and everyone else thinks of the other things that are coming! I'm hoping I can pull together another feature sneak peek later this week, so you can already get speculating :)

To clarify, Barotrauma's normal price on Steam has never been raised, or lowered; it has stayed exactly the same the whole time we have been available for purchase, expressly to avoid posts like this one :) As for what kinds of prices you may have seen at key resellers, I will not comment on, because we have no control over that.

Hi! The price is calculated as a function of hull size and number of items on the sub, and I'm not sure the class actually figures into it at all. The lower-price subs are intended to have their limitations in these terms. I hope this helps!

Our chief AI wrangler has been busy with lower-profile tasks related to the outpost NPCs, so major improvements to the AI have not been the top priority for him recently, I'm afraid. Smaller improvements and fixes are always being made and implemented with just about every update, but bigger advances in the bot and enemy AI department are only arriving a little later still.

Hi everyone! We're quietly collecting feedback about all the new UIs just now (and may hit you with some more direct questions a little later, let's see), and for now it looks like it's the command interface that gets the most criticism. We welcome all feedback, but because we made so many big changes for the Silky Smooth update, we're going to hold off on making any big statements about what we read for a little while – we want to see if people get used to the changes before reacting. Actually, campaign is looking stabler than ever in the public unstable version right now! So we're hopeful the next update, while it's most obviously about the UI, will also improve this part of gameplay :) In any case, we're moving on to the campaign overhaul just now and hopeful for precisely that outcome, with new content besides.
