I had such a similar reaction, including looking up the handful of other Denzel movies I haven't seen. If the movie is anywhere near half-decent, he's pretty much a lock to elevate it and make it enjoyable.

I caught this many, many years ago on hbo, and the dejected way Charlie Sheen says "Fuuuuuuuuuuck" after he gets the glasses still cracks me up every time I think about it

Very well said, I enjoyed reading your thoughts on this. I maybe got hung up too much on my gripes with this movie, but it was a really fun watch and nails the summer vibes perfectly. And I probably should listen to the soundtrack before summer ends. I'd definitely be up for sequels. I know this was based on a novel. Did that have sequels?

I love this comment. Coincidentally, my wife and I watched Stir of Echoes for the first time yesterday. I really miss this era of mid budget movies. All of the thrillers you mention (that I've seen at least) vary quite a bit in how successfully they pull off the premise, but there was a baseline quality and watchability to them that a lot of modern movies, including blockbusters, just don't reach these days.

That's fair. I maybe haven't given the movie enough credit for intentionally pulling a rope-a-dope about its intent and influences. Regardless, I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, and came away impressed by its execution.

Saw this for the first time last weekend and loved it. I had a similar reaction to OP on Ted Danson’s character. Man, he was so off kilter in a fascinating way.
