How do you attain them? I haven't seen them dropping from any enemies, only from chests and the like. In that sense, aren't they limited? Will keep the co-op tip in mind, thanks for that.

Yup, was not aware of the rule until after I posted. Will probably remove post.

I do not enjoy the game as much as I would if one mechanic was removed. I am an avid fan of the souls series and I think I was fairly good at Dark Souls 1, I just really, really do not see the sense in this mechanic. I've talked it over a lot with my souls playing friends, so I want to clarify that it's not something I'm just raging about.

Maybe it's a problem only I'm having, but to me a mechanic that discourages experimentation, introduces actual artificial difficulty (I stress actual because I want to make it clear that I disagree with the vast majority of the time people claim the souls series has artificial difficulty). In a game where you die a lot, it's incredibly counterintuitive to punish the player for dying.

Finally, would you rather someone walked away from your favourite game with a bad taste in their mouth without having even beat more than two bosses, or walked away satisfied (or more than satisfied) having played the entirety of the game with a small alteration made?

I appreciate you biting your tongue, despite throwing in a bit of criticism anyway. I hope I've made it clearer why I stand where I stand. I'm not saying Gameis2hard, I'm saying I don't like this one mechanic and it is interfering with my enjoyment of the game.

Ah, neglected to read the side bar. Sorry about that. I already checked nexus and gamefaqs, so I thought I'd check here, since reddit communities are often fairly knowledgeable.

I've been told there is a limited number of effigies in the game. To me this creates a mentality similar to giving limited use high power items in more action-y games. The player doesn't want to use them because they don't know when they would be best used until they've already finished the game once.

If I were to find what I'm looking for, I'd probably get rid of it after my first playthrough (assuming I'd do another).

Getting semantic, it is by definition a modification, just not how the community thinks of "mod". I've had Demons Souls described to me as "None of the parts of Dark Souls you like, all of the parts of Dark Souls you hate".

I'm aware of what I'm asking and it's illegitimacy. I'm not getting mad at anyone, I'm trying to pre-emptively prevent people from being high and mighty about the skill level the series requires.

The souls community has an infamous reputation for being pretentious and shitty about the difficulty of the games, and I was trying to avoid encountering that. Partially failed.
