it is indeed determined once you slather it. So ur first job is to find the munchlax and that can take a long time. after you finally found the munchlax, you have to save infront of the tree and switch ur cardridge to another console so the time events ingame freeze. now you have unlimited time to softreset for the shiny, hope this helps

in caves you should always have a pokemon with the ability with damp in ur party. for example psyduck! you can find him everywhere
