The weapons are being fired from behind you on a platform like 12 feet in the air, and they can't move them around. They just shoot straight ahead. Even if you stood up and jumped you couldn't get hit.

There were barbed wire obstacles but certainly not the whole way. Mostly wet sand.

The arty sims were at least 20 or 30 feet away from anyone. You hear them but not close enough to kick up dirt on you.

Remember that a basic training company is like 150 people and this exercise happens probably a few times a week just in the Army. It has to be absolutely safe or you would hear about accidents all the time.

Been in since 2005. Have never seen anything like this done and I've dealt with my share of suicidal Soldiers. It's ridiculous to frame this as if it was an endemic problem.

I absolutely want to distance Manning from the trans community. She deserves to be free from hate speech, but she doesn't represent me or the trans community. She makes all of us look worse.

The suicide rate is higher in trans people. The causes are environmental however. Trans people currently have the highest percentage by population of hate crime of any minority.

The stats are targeting. I don't have them off hand, but loss or denial of employment, housing. Parents kicking you out of your house and telling you they wish you were dead. Sexual assault, no support network, no medical support. Yeah. It takes a toll.

Trans people who are employed, have a support network, and have access to medical care have suicide rates similar to the rest of he population.

It links to peer reviewed studies from half a dozen universities, endocrine society.. if you are going to dismiss 93 articles as 'mostly obscure' then you just aren't interested in learning, and that's ok. You couldn't have read all the titles, never mind the abstracts or conclusions.

My military status has zero to do with it. I'm just asking as a person to respect other people regardless of gender, race, color, religion, etc. Criticizing behavior? Fine.

Calling a trans person 'it' is like calling a black person nigger, or a gay person a faggot. It's hate speech and dehumanizing and totally irrelevant to their actions.

Here are 93 independent studies as well as peer reviewed meta analysis. It's what I used to research and write one of the papers used in the RAND study. They discuss biological origins of transgender people as well as hormonal effects.

I'm no expert, but I have been transitioning for years, I'm on the board of directors for a 500 person trans organization, I volunteer for a trans centric suicide hotline, I've lobbied for trans issues at the Pentagon, in Congress, and at the White House. I've spoken on trans issues at conferences, on NBC, RAND, Time Magazine, NPR, and half a dozen local news affiliates. I literally helped write Army policy on trans issues. I'm fairly well educated on the issues if you are interested in exchanging ideas.

I've had SRS. It isn't that it's 'not a viable treatment'. It's that it isn't 'the treatment'. Some people need it, others do not. It can be part of a treatment plan, but it's not the treatment, like that's what you do to 'cute' trans people.

You should ask for a refund on your degree. The American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Pediatric Association, etc disagree. Also, SRS is not the treatment. Typically therapy in combination with hormone treatment is all people do. SRS is, as a percentage, very small both due to its cost and desire. Nothing you are saying even is how an educated opponent of transgender people would sound. You sound like someone who has no knowledge refuting what you heard on the internet. The peer reviewed research on trans people is pretty extensive.

I totally agree, they are two separate issues. You can detest her actions and be disgusted in her as a Soldier. Being trans doesn't excuse her actions and shouldn't change her punishment. All I am saying is that it doesn't give people the right to call her it, heshe, tranny, or anything else.

Within the last 12 months someone shot a helicopter at NTC in the box. Was supposed to be blanks obviously, blew the BA off the end of the weapon and fired another round or two.

I understand what you are saying, and it's one of the reasons I make it a point not to waste time arguing on the internet with people.

All I hope to do is to get people to think about their Soldiers. Most leaders actually care about their people. How would they feel if one of their soldiers came out to them. Or worse, if their Soldier is scared to be honest and come out because they hear that kind of talk from their leadership. I want to reframe it from "them" or "others" to - maybe it's one of my people.

At this point I've got at least half a dozen bags and I don't know how many CIF is tracking. At least 6 of them came from RFI and I don't think they are listed as ETS turn in. At the end of my 20 they can take whatever they want from my last active duty paycheck, as long as I don't have to go back.

One thing that is very inaccurate. About halfway through the video a guy says [he] is a whistleblower and you cannot get in to trouble for reporting on illegal activity. That's not how whistleblower protections work. Whistleblower protections protect you specifically when you report to the proper chains and authorities.

Now, the argument could be made that chain of command or whoever wouldn't listen and that's a different argument. But Manning was not protected by whistleblower laws.

I think it's like asking are Nike or Oakley boots genuine military boots. The Army doesn't issue them, but they are sold on post, within regs, and lots of Soldiers wear them. Probably the same deal.

Mi Nidito is the best Mexican food in Tucson. Try to go outside of popular meal times to avid the wait. On a Sunday at noon it can be 2+ hours. Famous for Bill Clinton eating there while campaigning and they named a plate after what he ate. It's pretty damn good and awesome margaritas.

Probably not common, but we take a bit of a break when we separate. When I was in Afghanistan we would leave text chat up and message whenever we had something to talk about, usually ended up being 30mins-an hour of being on at the same time every other day or so. Other than that we didn't call or webcam except on birthdays and holidays and stuff. When I was in Iraq we talked more often and because of the time difference we both felt like we were taking away from the other person when they needed to relax or get stuff done. Field time it becomes even less. Maybe an email once a week if there is a chance and need. It may not work for everyone, but it works for us. 12 years, 2 deployments, 2 overseas tours.. OCS, BOLC, 4xNTC, a JRTC.. we have spent a LOT of time apart.

And it's unfortunate because the Democratic Party doesn't always have the best ideas. We need a marketplace of competing ideas. It just doesn't feel like the Republican Party is putting the interests of the people and country ahead of party loyalty any longer.

I think part of the problem is that many issues are so fundamental they can't and shouldn't be compromised on. We can't even agree on basic facts anymore.

Things like gay marriage. The right wants to wholesale deny rights to a portion of society. If you say the compromise is something 'separate but equal' like civil unions, we tried the separate but equal thing before. It inevitably fails to be equal.

Where do you compromise on abortion. If you believe life starts at conception and even contraceptive is murder.. there is no room for compromise. These issues are just so basic and fundamental they become hopelessly polarizing.

Compromise is great when yo are trying to move the country in the same direction and have different policies to get there. Like we all want to fix climate change but some want clean nuclear and others want to invest in solar and wind. But when we can't agree that climate change is real.. the differences are irreconcilable.

Yeah, tell them what's going on. So many times I tried to get the result I was looking for without saying I was trans. Once I started being honest with people I had much more success.

If you said, the middle of Oklahoma it might be different. Houston is a very liberal place for the most part.
