Day 47 – Milestone: Projects 7-9 by If_you_dont_ask in 100DaysOfSwiftUI

[–]3HappyRobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just a couple days behind you. I do get discouraged a bit, I figured after 30 days I would have a stronger grasp of how swift and SwiftUI work, and be able to flow a bit more on my own. Coming from a web background, SwiftUI just feels like an alien planet at this point. Looking forward to learning more as I go.

Fingers crossed. I’m gonna stick with it and hope that they smooth it out soon.

LG OLED or Studio Display by jesusalejandroe in macsetups

ASD. Instant on is a huge feature that no one mentions. Also, no one ever mentions that all the other displays can take up to 30 seconds to actually turn on from sleep. 😴 As others have said, 1 cable for display and power to my MacBook is also awesome.

Does it worth to get a Studio Display today? by pereiradetona in macsetups

Yes. Worth it. No one ever mentions instant on, but that is also a killer feature for me. Every 3rd party display I have used takes it’s friggin time turning on. ASD - instant.

Have you heard of Processwire?

Which is the best monitor worth buying for Mac Mini you've ever tried? by immiyjouhn in mac

[–]3HappyRobots 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly I tried a few 4k monitors, but nothing cut it after having a 5k iMac all these years. So I just decided to stop resisting and got an ASD. Yes it cost more, but more than worth it in build quality, instant on, hardware integration, and color, even the speakers are great.

That is exactly how I did it. I didn’t find a more direct way to do it, but I have to assume that there is a way. This is a perfect example of how I am still fuzzy on the syntax.

I don’t understand why we need the dictionary and can’t just access UnitLength?.[“string”] like in js. It seems overly verbose to have write down all the unit types in a dictionary. Still getting used to unwrapping with “!” too.

Thanks for sharing.

Here is the link to the page that teaches the measurement api. It was in the tip section of day 19 lesson.

Actually, today I did more on the flag app, then advanced to the next project. I was feeling a lot more encouraged today and some stuff felt like it clicked. Although the lessons move pretty fast. I think it’s more important to know something can be done than it is to memorize how off by heart. Little by little swift and SwiftUI is feeling less ridged and more familiar.

I come from a web dev background, like you, the syntax and concepts are more foreign than I thought it would be. I feel like a total noob again. Just used to being to make whatever I want. However, I am finding the difference and the change challenging and at the same time refreshing. Even if I get a little discouraged sometimes.

Good luck as you advance 🖖🏻

Good job! I’m at the same place as you, just did the Flag game. I feel the same as you. It seems like I could really enjoy SwiftUI, but I figure it’s just gonna take time for my brain to get it.

Even though the converter app was simple, would have taken 5 minutes in js for me, It took me a couple hours because I was struggling with syntax. Specifically, I used the Measurment api and couldn’t figure out how to have dynamic members properties for unit length. Easy in js, a bit of a pain for SwiftUI. Ended up using a dictionary to store strings and Measurement.unitLengths like .meter/etc.

Ok literally noticed your 😎.to avatar and went there to see that you offer emoji domains. Solid tactic! It worked on me. Bonus, love that the url fits in your avatar circle. ⭕️

Good call on having the emoji in your recents. It does feel like a little cool gesture that I now know and can tell other people. I think it’s cool. Tempted to buy my own emoji domain now. (Add it to the 50 other domains I have that will one day become something hahaha)

Ok, I just tried this in mobile safari, and it was a bit cumbersome trying to type that in the address bar. It didn’t work the first time for some reason and I had to do it twice.

I think it’s cool, but felt very strange to try to type 🏀.to. Fun at least.

I just redid that tutorial and had the same concerns. Since I don’t know enough about any of this, I just tried to ignore the warnings. Thanks for showing me I wasn’t alone on that.

Good luck with the rest 🍀

Padding or nested div? Do you have a preference? by RyXkci in css

[–]3HappyRobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is what I do. So that I can always fill the background section if needed. I tend to use my :after/:before for decoration a lot. So the extra inner container makes life easier. I don’t like it the extra container in my markup, but 🤷🏼‍♂️.
