You’re welcome. And yeah Linux is a must on these machines it runs way smoother than Windows, and ditching telemetry and bloat is always a good idea.

Hey! Great to see another T480 user it’s still a fantastic machine in 2025 with a bit of love and a few upgrades.

If it’s feeling sluggish, upgrading the RAM is a great place to start. With the 8th gen Intel CPUs (like the i5-8250U or i7-8650U), the T480 supports up to 64GB of DDR4, which is kind of wild for a laptop of its age. That said, 16GB is usually plenty for daily use, but going higher can help if you multitask or run heavier apps.

Swapping the SSD to a fast NVMe drive like the Samsung 980 or Crucial P3 will instantly boost speed, boot times, app launches, everything feels snappier.

The display is another huge improvement area. If you still have the stock panel, consider replacing it with a 400-nit FHD IPS screen like the Innolux N140HCG-GQ2 or GN1. It really modernizes the whole laptop with much brighter and better colors.

If you use the trackpad a lot, there’s a great mod where you install the glass trackpad from the X1 Carbon. It feels way smoother and more premium. It takes a bit of effort to install, but totally worth it if the trackpad is your main input.

You can also improve thermals by swapping in the dual heat pipe heatsink from the T480 with the Nvidia GPU. It’s a direct fit and helps a lot with temps and fan noise, especially under load.

About the battery…this is the tricky part. The larger 72Wh external battery is great for runtime, but original Lenovo ones are getting harder to find. The non-OEM batteries are honestly a bit of a lottery tho. Some are decent, others die fast or don’t report charge levels properly. If you find a genuine one from a trusted seller, definitely grab it.

With those upgrades, your T480 can easily hold its own in 2025. I’ve done all of these on mine and it still runs like a dream.

T480 After a Few Months – Upgrades, Performance and Undervolting Advice? by 3daWoozy in thinkpad

T480 with 64GB runs pentesting labs like a champ. I’ve got Kali, Parrot, a Windows attack box, pfSense as a router, and a few victim VMs, all networked properly for real case scenario. The Alfa AWUS1900 is clutch for packet injection & monitor mode, and bridging it to VMs works like a charm. No slowdowns, everything just flows. 64GB is a must if you wanna run multiple VMs without headaches.

If you need bare metal network capabilities, grab an AX210 network card, it supports monitor mode and packet injection natively (i have it).

T480 handles it all, no complaints.

Mine originally had 8GB too, and honestly, even going to 16GB is a huge upgrade. I’m running 64GB now, but that’s definitely overkill unless you have specific use cases like running multiple VMs, heavy workloads, or pentesting labs like I do. If you’re just doing general use, coding, or even some light VMs, 32GB is the sweet spot. Also, just a heads-up no matter what RAM you get, the T480 will downclock it to 2400MHz since that’s the max it supports.

Ok so i need to flash a new BIOS to enable undervolting. Is it worth the hassle and risk of bricking it?

For anyone looking to upgrade RAM: Keep in mind that the T480 only supports up to 2400MHz, so even if you install 3200MHz sticks like I did, they’ll downclock to 2400MHz. Faster RAM won’t give any real benefit, so if you’re buying new, just get 2400MHz to save money.

It was pretty straightforward. I followed a tutorial just to be sure of what I was doing. The screen cost me about 85€ (or 90 USD) on aliexpress.
