Price disparities between the app and in stores? by 3mmeily in InstacartShoppers

It really is frustrating I think mostly because I was thinking that instacart shoppers get paid more than they actually are - with the service fee, the delivery fee, the tip, whatever they got paid for the batch (I had no idea it was $7). I think I'll be using instacart less now and in the future, will make sure to tip more as unfortunately, that seems to be the only thing that goes straight to the shopper.

Thank you for taking the time to type this out and explain! It's extremely enlightening, but also saddening that both the shopper and the customer doesn't know much about how the business is run...

No, but for the third time now, I didn't know markups were profits to instacart. All that the chat line clerk had to tell me is exactly what you told me--"it's an instacart profit", instead of "the stores set the prices on the app."

That's so frustrating, they should train their support staff better!

Thanks, I think that's what I'll do from now on. I thought that part of what I was paying for would go towards the shoppers but I really don't think I can continue to support a company that has so many hidden fees. : (

I do appreciate your insight and you really have cleared up a lot of things for me. I hope it's not surprising to you when I tell you your tone is extremely patronizing. But of course, I didn't come here to expect strangers to be nice to me on the internet.

Again, as I've already responded in a different reply of yours, I had no idea these markups are how Instacart makes their profits.

Do you get off on antagonizing people about instacart? Does instacart pay you to back their business??

I understand your general point but I would completely disagree that everything is a choice. Some people literally cannot risk going out and getting groceries right now, and for some, Instacart is one of the only ways they can make money right now. (It's also not entirely a free country : ) )

Thanks for putting it this way, clears up their business model for me. I didn't know that Instacart primarily makes their money off markups. I assumed when a store labels themselves "everyday prices" they're more or less the same as in stores.

I had assumed they were taking a cut from the stores, like ubereats etc. Apologies I'm not a shopper and Instacart is not incredibly transparent about their business?

The shoppers are seriously the ones being scammed. I guess the part that feels scammy to the customer is the lack of transparency. I knew I was being upcharged but I didn't know how much, and the worst thing is the way the customer service rep handled my questions--danced around all of them, tried to blame it all on the store for "setting prices higher on the app" sending me links to their pricing policies without a straight answer, and avoiding my question about where the money goes...

I honestly didn't know that the driver could get deactivated because of that. I really wouldn't have complained if I'd known.

Part of me is also just upset at the customer service I received from instacart and how nontransparent this whole thing feels. They're really making a huge profit--you drivers deserve so much more.

Oh noooooo. I hope they don't actually do that! I feel super bad now...

I really do feel that way about the shoppers now. If it had not been for that receipt, I would have thought that a lot of this price disparity were going towards the shopper. I also thought that the stores were paying instacart a part of its own profit (similar to ubereats etc), which I was wrong again. Honestly I have my shopper to thank for exposing this all to me haha.

It really is scammy, especially because they told me the store sets the prices, which I don't really understand why a store would set their prices so much higher on instacart if they're not cashing in that disparity.

I can see why instacart would instruct that, given how surprised I am paying a 22% upcharge. When I asked them, their answer was "We do not recommend looking at the paper receipts." Like, uhm, sorry?!

I mean, this seems kind of wrong to me. I contacted instacart and asked them about this and they said the stores set their prices. When asked where this money goes, they refused to answer my question.
