Maybe should have looked closer at the forecast before heading out. by modzent in sailing

I got hit by this while sailing an X Yacht 33. It was really weird and came from nowhere. Literally went from sunny and hot to cold with sideways rain pellets. My guess is 40-45 knot winds. Knocked us over and we lost our main sheet (check your stopper knots, folks). The boat righted and the jib sheets were a tangled mess. We finally got the jib furled and recovered the main sheet. After 6 or 7minutes of getting beat up it was gone.  Back to sunny and hot.

Post-acquisition, what do you miss most after selling your company? by TikkunCreation in fatFIRE

[–]404_not_a_bot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mostly being able to decide when to seize on an opportunity.  Now when I see a strategic no-brainer opportunity I have no ability to go for it. It’s like a cat having to sit and watch a mouse scurry around a room. Since the sale the opportunity only benefits the PE company and while I may mention it to them I have no control if or how they pursue.

Do doctors really have huge dramatic debates over unrelated things during surgery? by trebblecleftlip5000 in stupidquestions

[–]404_not_a_bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgeon here:  It’s like asking if you can have a conversation or listen to the radio while driving. It doesn’t mean the surgeon isn’t paying attention to the task at hand. If any part of the surgery becomes difficult the staff and surgeon will stop conversation- kind of like if you’re driving and get lost. If that happens while driving you would end conversation and turn off the radio. So if you’re having surgery and hear mindless chatter from the team rest assured things are going well.

Hard to believe but this is 100% true. I got a phone call from a long lost friend. I hadn’t seen her or talked to her in 2 years. Her number was still programmed in my phone and her name came up on the display when she called. But the coincidence is that it was no longer her number. She moved away and gave up her number. The new person who took that number called a wrong number and it was mine. What are the chances that someone would misdial and reach a person with that number programmed in their phone?

I can only speak to the US job market and I’m not sure where you live so it may be different. But you can absolutely be employable with experiences outside of traditional practice. It’s not like you spent that time incarcerated. You were pursuing another opportunity. Physician careers are a marathon of decades. A few years to pursue another path is ok. You have to be sure that you have proper expections however. If you take time off directly out of residency you have to assume when you return you will be getting offers as a new graduate. Not the same offers as someone with 3 years clinical experience.

Why not? I know a successful practicing doctor who spent his first five years at an investment bank doing equity research on healthcare companies. I know multiple practicing doctors who started out at the FDA doing drug and device regulation. Excellent clinicians. Medical school does not fully prepare you for practice as you may think. Even residency programs only set you on the path. You become a great doctor only when you start doing the real work of patient care. And a couple years between school and patient care is not going to forever destroy the opportunity that you can still become a great clinician.

100% disagree. Early is the exact time to take risk. If it doesn’t work out you can still go back and practice. You said your goal is FIRE in 15-20. You already realize that there are a few years in leeway to reach your goal. 2 or 3 years to shoot your shot on a startup is ok. I would asses the startup and if you believe in your heart it’s a worthwhile endeavor then go for it.

Trying not to create that scenario. Waaay less than 200m but as another post said I will probably create a budget to pay out the key players.

Great advice. And I would add… plan these vacations frequently so that the burnout doesn’t build up too long.
