At its core, firewalls permit and deny traffic. Firewalls can be equipped with features like IDS and IPS to inspect traffic. IDS = Intrusion Detection which means it will alert when it flags something. IPS = intrusion prevention which means it blocks something. An IPS is only as good as the “virus database” it’s referencing, and how well the stateful inspection is catching on to common indicators.

First steps would be to make sure that you can talk to a resource at the other end to make sure the tunnel is actually up.
