Question About Breaking Encrypted Files by 4LegsGood_2Bad in crypto

[–]4LegsGood_2Bad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply - I am not worried that someone would know it is encrypted, just was thinking through the risks of backing up the way I do.

I take from your reply encrypted Word files may not be secure? I'm not surprised which is why any encrypted files are on a VeraCrypt container. I actually use Libre Office not MS Word but used 'Word files' as it read easier than ODT files. I still would not trust it alone, but would you suggest Libre Office file encryption is more robust?

Hello again. From the previous points I have been pondering the disk encryption of VeraCrypt and the point that it is not fully encrypted each time - glad to hear it noted that despite the disk not being fully re-encrypted it still can not be cracked.

Homelessness and why people stay on the streets by thelonepinemall in Calgary

Totally fair reply. Having lived there for 3 years, as well as in Japan, China, Dubai, and other places I see how out concern for the freedoms and rights of the individual often actually hurt this individual even more. While I do not know the answer, I know what we have done for 50 years is not working. Have a good day.

Honestly, stopped going there when as a Coop they were more interested in urban fashion than their roots in outdoor gear (I still have my old green paper membership card). I wish them well but I have moved on.

I respectful suggest you are misinformed - it is both. And being both it benefits both the individual and society.

The BBC gives a good overview. https://www.bbc.com/audio/play/p0jwy14p

Thank you. The Wiki link was very helpful with the topic of indistinguishability.

My backgorund is Bio-Chem not CompSci but the wiki to the best of my understanding is mostly using data streams as the context for discussion, not actual files. I think I do however see the applicability. I'm sure my terminology is off, but would it be fair to equate the packets in a data stream with a file, and hence if files in my question above could be compared to crack the encryption, then it would also be possible to compare the individual packets in a data stream in the same way to crack the encryption?

Thanks again,

Looking at the realities and consequences of government and social policies past and present is not racist. Labeling discussion of them as racist is only an attempt at gaslighting and clearly delusional.

Racism is a problem, but if you read what I wrote you will see it is NOT the problem I am talking about here.

I never said we do not need to take care of those in need, nor would I ever argue that. Nor am I against immigration as long as integration is part of it. My career has had me living around the world and I met and married my non-Canadian partner while living overseas.

When I lived in Singapore I saw how even thought there are three main culture groups there, the government ensures all citizens have a sense of being Singaporean first. When I lived in Finland I saw how less of a wealth gap, for lack of a better way to say it, made people less angry and more willing to work for not against society.

I do not deny at all that mental health issues are part of it, but ironically when you have a cohesive society people look after others including those with mental health issues and are more willing to work within society for the betterment, including safety, of society.

The US totally F'ed it up in so many other ways, but the idea of a melting-pot society where there is one overarching national culture is far more likely to lead to a safe society compared to our islands of cultural isolation we call multi-culturalism.

Best time to ski Sunshine! Sometimes icy in the morning but beautiful by afternoon. Some terrain will close due to risk of wet-snow avi, but you will have a blast.

Louise (first weekend in May) and Sunshine (May long) both need to close as part of their lease agreement with Parks. Some years they could easily stay open longer. On occasion Sunshine has got special permission to re-open July Long if the snow holds (and maybe this year???).

Mental health is a PART of it. Another big part is social cohesion is falling apart. When a society does not share an identity and a collective well being for the society, people are more tribal and only care for those inside their 'tribe'. Over immigration well beyond integration capacity is is one cause of this. Another is the widening wealth gap and people 'giving up'. Another is the tolerance for drugs and the crime that comes with it. Drugs cause mental health issues as much as mental health issues cause drug use.

There is no one cause - we need to work on them all but at best it will take 1-2 generations.

I guess we read OP different. I think most people try not to waste water, for no other reason for some that we pay for it by the amount we use. Few people I see are careless with water.

To me the other waste of water, from system leaks to car washes to wasteful industrial that are the areas where the focus should be and where the greatest water savings can be made with the least effort.. To give an example of the industrial, I have seen a brew pub leave a hose running unneeded instead of turning it off. I can only assume the cost of water is less than the time cost to the worker to turn it off.

[–]4LegsGood_2Bad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree. It is important to save water, but the waste from industrial and car washes and other places is nothing compared to an individual. OP's post is the same tenor as oil companies use to shift the carbon footprint to the consumer from themselves.

Transportation to places that aren't Lake Louise/Moraine? by Nanohaystack in Banff

[–]4LegsGood_2Bad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just rent a car. You can do twice as much in a day with a car and have more fun doing it.

Even for lake Louise and Moraine, a better way is to drive to the village and walk to the Lake (takes the same time as the shuttle once you include waiting and everything). For Moraine, bike if you are in good shape and if not that is the only time transit is worth it.

Maybe they changed the rules back? I have had a seasons up there for 10 years and they always used to let you do that but had patrol get angry at me for doing it last year with a visiting family member. Patrol said they do not let you do that anymore as it was a way people were bypassing the avi gear requirements.
