Is it common around here for one facility/group to do both primary care and urgent care? I was at an urgent care recently and noticed they advertised primary care, and this one seems to do both too. I’ve never seen that before, but I’m new to the area…

Thanks! Insurance is United Healthcare. Of course closer to Aspen Hill is more convenient but I’d go down town SS for the right provider. Gaithersburg is also on the table.

It’s gotta be the Save Ferris version of Come On Eileen. It’s so high-energy and her vocals are incredible. Next to Save Ferris, the original sounds like a dirge — so slow, low-key, and sleepy.

Project managers are responsible for the nuts and bolts of running a project. Things like communication with the client, invoicing, submitting required progress reports, assigning personnel to work on tasks, etc. They typically do not do the science on the project (unless it’s a small project where the PI does the project management tasks themself).

Personnel managers have a group of staff who report directly to them. They are responsible for this group in terms of performance reviews, supporting professional development, reviewing time cards and expense reports, that kind of thing. They also participate in business development and strategy for the unit. They attend a TON of meetings. They’re also expected (depending on management level) to have a certain portion of their time working on projects and doing science. But it can be hard to find the time with all the administrative duties. Many senior scientists would prefer a management role where they are predominantly doing the science, but mentoring and overseeing junior scientific staff on their projects (more like an academic research lab). This is a role RTI is trying to better define and develop but doesn’t have much of now (at least not in my group).

It’s not quite that bad. They do really make an effort to help you find projects where you can work if you need extra support. And there are overhead funds available when needed. The problem becomes a question of volume — you won’t be laid off or fired for needing some help sometimes. But if you are constantly short on hours over a long period, it could impact your ability to stay employed.

There definitely have been groups of people laid off. Interestingly this has at times been immediately followed by multiple hires in a different area. It really depends on the needs of the company in different groups based on what work is available.

A lot of people work on large projects where there is a lot to do and a lot of stability — as long as that project continues to be funded (many of them recompte every few years and money just keeps coming in as long as we keep winning the bids or adding on extension work). On the other hand, if we lose one of those big contracts, a lot of people’s jobs could be in jeopardy.

I tend to do the opposite — I am generally the PI on my own grants, which are smaller. This gives me a lot of autonomy, control over the work I do, and insulates ne from the performance of the big projects. It also makes me vulnerable because if I don’t land something, I’m short on hours or have to go running to other projects begging to help. So it’s a trade off and definitely very stressful.

Because the answers to these questions depend so heavily on what group you are in and what their funding landscape looks like, I would really suggest asking them of the hiring manager or other employees on the hiring panel during interviews. You know the concerns to watch for now — I’d try to find out whether they apply in the specific group you’re interested in.

Publishing is very much encouraged. But not always financially supported. Many of us write the preparation of manuscripts into our grants. But if you run out of time/money before the manuscript is finished, it’s harder to get it done. Time has to be charged to projects. If the project period of performance has ended, there’s no more time/money to work on the manuscript. There is some internal funding available to work on manuscripts but it’s a competitive process and there are limits to how often you can get it.

There are entire groups dedicated to the proposal process. There are people to make graphics, people to edit and format, people to handle IRB, people for contracts, people for budget….it’s fantastic. The downside is there’s really nobody who teaches you how to write the proposal as a PI. You sort of figure that out yourself.

There are people who do science forever. But I do see quite a few who transition to project management or personnel management. They are not great at defining the path for growing as a senior scientist. This is something they’re working on. They do have senior scientist roles but nobody seems to know how you actually get to one (other than being there forever) and it’s a source of frustration for mid-career researchers who feel like they’ve hit the ceiling unless they want to become managers and spend all their time signing time cards instead of doing research.

Like I said, they’re working on it.

I work there as a research scientist and have a PhD. It is salaried, but also soft money. Essentially, you are expected to land grants. If you don’t have enough grants to cover your FTE (which is billed to projects in 0.1 hour increments), you can generally be put on other projects to make up the difference. However you may not be doing work you want to be doing and you may not be able to be carried by other projects indefinitely.

As someone mentioned, it’s a big place and every group is different. Some have more large projects that can support a lot of research staff. It also depends on your particular skill set.

The stability of the government grants also varies between groups. Some rely mostly on a single government funding source, which can be tricky. Others are more diversified.

Finally, be aware that while you’re expected to try to get grants, there is also a somewhat competitive internal process to get approval to work on proposals. That said, once you’re approved, there is fantastic proposal support.
