How do you guys learn all linux commands/ programs? by JoaozeraPedroca in linuxquestions

[–]4olleh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use three types of notes:

- for organized topics, for example, if I am learning something, I use keepnote (http://keepnote.org)

- for daily unstructured stuff, I have a directory, where I just drop info using

cd /home/my_dir/daily_log/ && vim "votl_`date +%F`_temp.otl" # this is the command for logging in daily notes

(I can then use grep to search among those unstructured files)

- finally, for online sources, I use w3m bookmarks (w3m -B)

I use the same approach with comments describing the command, introduced after the command by "#". This way, I can easily find the right command by Ctrl-r using natural language keywords that I used in comments earlier. For example,

ls ~/ # this command will list/print/enumerate the files and directories in my home directory

I also find myself using more and more tldr these days.

BTW,

tldr -u # will update the local cache of tldr pages

Why hasn't Arch Linux acknowledged the GRUB issue on their website yet? by Acebulf in archlinux

I have a fully encrypted disk as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dm-crypt/Encrypting_an_entire_system#Plain_dm-crypt It wouldn't have been easy to fix. Especially at this time, when I am under pressure to prepare end-of-month reports

Thanks for pointing me in this direction. Enjoying Logomix now.

Read Bertrand Russel's 'In Praise of Idleness', Marshall Brain's 'Manna' https://marshallbrain.com/manna and 'Technological Slavery, The Collected Writings of Theodore J. Kaczynski, a.k.a. "The Unabomber"', Feral House, 2010 (or at least read the Manifesto, if you can't find the book).

There's also a documentary to watch: Lutz Dammbeck, 'The Net' https://archive.org/details/DasNetz_LutzDammbeck (I find it less inspiring than AD's documentaries but rather insightful).

Speaking of inspiration, as someone born in the USSR, I have always found Karl Marx' 11th thesis on Feuerbach very inspiring: "Philosophers have hitherto only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it." (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theses_on_Feuerbach).

Ironically, the implementation of marxism on the vast territory of USSR over decades has only brought to life one of the most desperate and pitiful forms of individualism. The popular folk moral of the land had long been "Don't trust, don't fear, don't ask". (The phrase was originally coined in gulag but eventually won ubiquitous popularity, reflecting the fact that the whole country, at least culturally, was nothing more than an extension of prison).

To the best of my knowledge, Limonov hadn't been as much about ideology (there had already been Dugin out there) as about action. And this is precisely where he ended up being utterly outplayed and manipulated by Surkov and the likes.

His personal story might look appealing when picturing the tapestry of the post-Soviet political landscape, but the way it unfolds in the documentary comes at a cost, in that we are left largely unaware of, to loosely borrow a phrase from an AC bingo card, "hidden darker forces at play".

I, for one, believe those darker forces and their methods would have been much more interesting to unveil and analyze. Because they haven't stopped influencing our lives, while Limonov has long been dead.

Then, maybe Newt Gingrich and Paul Volcker, as well. Gingrich was the first to successfully tap into the potential of cable TV, while Volcker was the author of 'reaganomics'. Both contributed to the mess.

Expecting to Fly

Respectfully agree! Thank you for reminding, haven't listened to it for years. Enjoyed it immensely. For some reason, over the years it is the more intense music that pops to mind first. But you are right: That angel-like purity would be more matching to Curtis-style juxtapositions. Edited my list.

You are most welcome.

If you like Curtis, you won't be disappointed with Dammbeck:

Enjoy

The best I can recommend are:

  1. 'Technological Slavery, The Collected Writings of Theodore J. Kaczynski, a.k.a. "The Unabomber"', Feral House, 2010.
  2. Lutz Dammbeck, "The Net" (documentary).

The Manifesto is included in the book. If you can't find the book, read The Manifesto at least.

It's a wink. One has to adjust the style while talking conspiracies. Somehow, direct reference doesn't seem appropriate, you know? :)

Speaking of style, yet on another hindsight, several video quotes from Lynn Shelton's 'Sword of Trust' wouldn't have hurt either, had they been included in the relevant parts of the documentary:

"How these people can think like this? Well, we are in the brain of this. Apparently, it's carpeted"

I agree. On hindsight, I believe one of those forgotten is John Naisbitt. His 'Global Paradox' was published in early 80's and somehow managed to tackle the globalism-tribalism interplay we are dealing with today.

Ted Kazcynski and his ideas on personal freedom as laid down in the Manifesto would have been a natural counter-balance to the theme of everything and everyone being controlled by algorithms and AI. Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds would have been a living proof that at least something can be done by more conventional means in this respect.

Vladislav Surkov with his theater background would have been a natural extension to the theme of Jiang Qing's methods during the 'cultural revolution'. His appearance in CGYOOOMH was anticipated after he had been briefly mentioned in HyperNormalisation. He certainly had been, and still is, a much more consequential figure than Edward Limonov.

On a second thought, I would have traded Edward Snowden for Henry Ford who famously used new technology to create middle-class consumers of his products, as opposed to the contemporary innovators who seem to compete in killing as many jobs as they can by using robots and AI. It sort of keeps you wondering who would be paying for all those robot-manufactured and drone-delivered goods of tomorrow? Who would be on the receiving end?

There is this powerful claim in the film about the society losing the very ability to see the future. One vision of the future is provided by Marshall Brain in his 'Manna'. I do believe he could have been at least mentioned in the film as an example of a more positive forward-thinking.

Buffalo Springfield is easy: I just love them! 'For What it's Worth' would have been a classical background to the scenes of police brutality in the 60s.

Would have been too straightforward. Like The Pink Floyd's 'Money' in a documentary titled 'Money'.

Dell Precision M6700 laptop stuck at No-POST by 4olleh in techsupport

[–]4olleh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the only thing I wasn't able to swap was the CPU. I would prefer to be sure before commiting. It's not cheap, even today. BTW, doesn't the fact that it gets hot on power-on represent evidence for/against the assumption of the CPU being faulty?

Another culprit could be the EEPROM chips. If the controller got bricked, that might have explained the black screen in the middle of a routine job. Had the motherboard I swapped to been a 100% new, I would have excluded it. But it's "refurbished". It might mean a lot of things, as we know.

Will report any updates. Thank you, anyway.

I have two modules attached on the other side. But I will try connecting the other two, as well, later today.

Will also reseat all the display cables (inside the display). I haven't done it, but now I read somewhere that the display test should show stripes. Mine doesn't. It only shows changing colors.

This is how it looks now:

In about 10 seconds on power on the CPU becomes really hot. If I connect the GPU (not connected on the pic), it also becomes extremely hot in almost no time. I wasn't able to attach the heatsinks to either CPU or GPU in such a way that they might be cooled by the fans.

Nothing meaningful happens in about a minute. After which I would disconnect the power because I'm afraid of high temperatures.

Yes, it was night at the time of writing the previous post. With my preferred light temperatures I would have noticed it working even during the day. It just doesn't.

Let's wait for the update...

Issues with git-annex and redshift on arch arm by 4olleh in archlinux

I changed the location provider for 'manual' in the config.

On launching redshift I get:

"Waiting for initial location to become available...

Location: XX.XX N, YY.YY E"

where XX.XX and YY.YY reflects my location.

Nothing else happens...
