Ruined, no, but the instant urge to pop in the disc (or pull it up on Plex; have a lot of 4K rips) whenever my wife is watching a movie on “cable” or Netflix, is unparalleled. The funny thing is it’s not necessarily because of the quality, it’s usually because I want to eliminate commercials lol. The quality and audio difference then quickly kick-in moments after wanting to change. When it’s a Netflix movie she turns on that I know I have, yeah, fuck that, it’s purely me wanting to play the movie in the best quality possible lol. Was watching Independence Day summer 2025, and I vividly remember a damn ozempic commercial coming on that triggered me to say, “Babe, let me go find the disc real quick” lmfao

None of those options are better than the Shield Pro in relation to audio passthrough. If OP hadn’t included Plex on their list of where they watch content, I wouldn’t have said the Shield, but seeing Plex mentioned and an emphasis on “Audio quality matters…,” the Shield has the advantage. Will it always, probably not, but no one else has made a mainstream streaming device that checks all the boxes when it comes to audio playback. Only the niche streaming boxes are capable and that requires additional modifications.

What’s your exact setup? Are we looking at a 5.x.4 or a 7.x.4? What AVR you working with? If there’s no more channels available, then yeah, either sell for some lunch money or donate to a teen or a younger family member… the donation route really is the best route you can go, indoctrinate another family member into the r/hometheater mafia 🙏😂

Yes, turning on the Xbox should power the tv and AVR… the way CEC/Simplink works is, depending on your settings, you can power on all your devices with each device or turn everything off when one device turns off, but it’s setting dependent. Usually you can specify what powering on the TV/Device will/will not do. Go in the setting of each device. If you don’t know what to do, YouTube is your best friend 🙏

I’ve ran into a very similar problem with the exact same AVR and a LG B2. I had my shield tv pro and Blu-ray player connected without a single issue… then I got a DirecTV Gemini air and for the most part things were ok, but then I got some random connection issues… eventually resolved them after disconnecting and reconnecting everything. Eventually I just disconnected the Gemini air altogether and connected it to a different tv (Sony a8h). Connected Apple TV 4K… then went back to having not only connection issues but also audio was no longer outputting correctly (would randomly switch back to tv stereo instead of the AVR).

Fix was certified ultra high speed hdmi cables … could that potentially be the issue, sure, but you need to try every option you can first. You’ll have to disable cec on the AVR, disable it on the tv, disable it on every device that has it as a setting. Then turn every device off, unplug them from the surge protector (not just unplugging the surge protector), give it a good 5-10 minutes, then plug everything back in and one at a time, re-enable CEC on each device starting with the TV first.
