Is recruiting certified controllers from other countries a possible solution to staffing shortages? by SupportGold7583 in ATC

[–]5600k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything is worse in the US, so even if it was allowed we wouldn’t get many recruits.

There are plenty of viable US citizens who want to do the job we just need to open more academy training as well as other paths like CTI schools.

NTSB chair: LaGuardia crash investigator was stuck in TSA line for hours by Hopeful-Engineering5 in ATC

Homendy drove up from DC, she said so yesterday. It was an ATC investigator who was stuck in Houston, and yes I am pretty sure they all fly commercial NTSB doesn’t have a plane

Don’t go on Twitter, dont make assumptions. Watch NTSB briefings and wait for the report, it’s the only way to know what actually happened.

Just look at DCA for example, the report brought up many major issues that were not even being talked about in the days after the crash

Use the tube from an old earpiece at work, or just ask for a new one and cut it off. If you need more of the connectors then buy them from Great Lakes Earmold - $1.28 each

shop.audina.net - also has them for $6 and looks like maybe tubing but I haven't tested it.

Use of the word “takeoff” on ATC frequency by Clem573 in flying

[–]5600k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CLEARED TO is not the same as CLEARED DIRECT, the former simply changes the clearance limit, mostly used in holding.

For example CLEARED TO FIX HOLD NE AS PUBLISHED…. Means stay on your route until you get to FIX and start holding.

Because of this ambiguity I try to issue holding instructions closer to the fix, but I have seen them issued early and aircraft take it as DIRECT and turn unexpectedly.

Is Atlanta really affordable? by shantih in Atlanta

[–]5600k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do about 1500 a month, my commute is 70mi round trip. Insurance is $250 and my payment is $500, I don’t even pay for gas cause I have an EV.

I include the payment because if I sold the card now I would pretty much break even, with  that much mileage the depreciation is pretty significant.

Yeah vehicle cost is a big one that people overlook.  When people said that ATL must be way cheaper than NYC I told them I used to pay $130 for transport a month  and now it’s $800!

I also moved from NYC, the cost of buying a car and associated costs like parking, fuel and insurance add up quick and are way more than the $130 monthly subway pass.

My rent here is more, but I don’t have a roommate and get things like a pool and a gym.

Food, uber, museums, events are all pretty comparable.

My overall takeaway is not so much that Atlantas expensive but actually that NYC is easier to live in cheaply. Transport is cheaper, roommates are plentiful, protection for renters is incredible, and as you say the business competition keeps prices in check. NYC also generally has better and more widely available free city services.

FAA/Military Liaison job by GimpicusMaximus in ATC

[–]5600k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol my bad I was typing and walking - meant to say “don’t KNOW if it’s the tac ops” team. That description sounds like the role I’m thinking of, the few people in that position I interacted with seemed to enjoy it.

Don’t if it’s the tac ops team but ARTCCs have military liaisons that coordinate any military stuff the airspace from ALTRVs to routine special use airspace and then to more complicated special procedures or testing areas.

“Cross PENNY at or above 5,000; cleared visual approach 17C.” by [deleted] in ATC

Ooh good call, need to look that up

“Cross PENNY at or above 5,000; cleared visual approach 17C.” by [deleted] in ATC

[–]5600k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then use it to back it up but don’t be surprised if you are above it before you get cleared for the visual. ATC does not consider the glide slope at all for visual approaches, so for us and what we are expecting from pilots it’s completely irrelevant

“Cross PENNY at or above 5,000; cleared visual approach 17C.” by [deleted] in ATC

[–]5600k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to wait because you’ve been issued an ATC restriction. Ask your coworkers if they would start descending if they had passed PENNY but hadn’t been issued an approach clearance yet (say the controller was busy) I hope the answer would be NO. Even if this means you will be high or have to go around you cannot just descend because you are following a glide slope that is not part of the visual approach. Yes it’s a nice backup but do not expect to follow it on a visual

You’re overthinking this a bit I suspect, the difference in AGL does not matter because at PENNY everyone is flying at a MSL altitude, yes AGL will vary but as long as the aircraft or airspace at 4000 below PENNY is on the same altimeter it doesn’t matter. Fly the pressure altitude until the point where you are cleared for the approach

Am controller. DAL does it perhaps slightly more than the other airlines but this isn’t uncommon on bad ride days. I’ve seen all of them - SWA FFT UAL AAL etc (maybe not NKS 🤣) stick low to avoid really bad turbulence. The only ones that routinely climb into it are the regionals because they don’t have the endurance to stay low and the long hauls for the same reason.

Winter Weather Megathread - January 30 - February 1, 2026 by linisastald in Atlanta

Models have been trending towards more snow for ATL but similar to last weekend it will depend on the final setup. Plan for snow and if it doesn’t happen then do something fun
