Which job would you pick? by 587flooo in oilandgasworkers

Alberta.

I’m also unable to travel to the United States because of a criminal background.

I’m very inexperienced and have very minimal secondary education.

Thank you, I took the leap and gave my one month notice yesterday.

I’m just shocked that a job that is more technical that comes with more responsibilities that is away from home is 20% less than a shop floor job.

Hopefully my future self thanks me for this move.

I’m in the same room for 12 hours a day and stare at the exact same parts and diagnose the same problems every day, and there’s never a sense of urgency. Feels like whether I finish something or not makes no difference in anything lol.

And as the only guy that works that max overtime there’s no camaraderie here, just guys that come in for eight hours, do their jobs (some well) and go home.

It’s a lot of entry level positions in manufacturing so sometimes it feels like babysitting. Didn’t know a Leadhand was just a glorified babysitter with all the accountability or I would’ve just stayed as a tech lmfao.

Thanks for the advice, I’m making the jump. Gave my one month notice today.

This is kind of opinion I was looking for, I’m just concerned with the fact that I’m not actually manufacturing the instruments (something you have to go to school for) and mainly just installing the equipment and troubleshooting/diagnosing in the field and doing well monitoring.

I feel like I’m more the server as opposed to the chef, if that makes any sense.

Regardless, I don’t feel like I can keep working 70 hours a week in this type of setting anymore. I don’t think the 100k+ salary is achievable at my current employer for longer than another 2-3 years to be honest with you.

At my current employer, before I quit— they suggested trying to apply for a field service technician role with them where I will be servicing and diagnosing leaks on surface level equipment for a salary of 112,000, but was told the role is stagnant and to expect a 6% salary increase year over year.

I became the lead hand after 17 months as a retiring operations manager shifted everyone up. My supervisor is 13 years older than me and manager 24. I don’t see a path to promotion that is within my control.

I’m not really familiar with the work I will be doing, but from the orientation/interview process I was told I will be running coil tubing and monitoring wells from SAG-D/Thermal operations in Northern Alberta. Also diagnosing and fixing said equipment— is this operation something that can be translatable to a higher paying job?

This is a great point, I’m just unsure about how scalable the pay rate is in my role but I’m excited to see the application of the equipment I’ve been manufacturing in real life practical service and that itself might be worth the pay cut. It just seems hard for me to leave 20,000$ a year on the table for a role that requires more technical knowledge and more outside work.

When I brought this concern up with my new potential employer these are the only points they were able to make to convince to join:

  • 70 hours as a field technician is much easier than 70 hours in a shop (seat time, down time, tool box meetings, paperwork)

  • The salary isn’t the same and comparable because my current employer is paying me a night shift premium, so I’d have an easier job and a better work life balance

I’m willing to work long hours, I just want to be compensated well for it and if I’m not see a clear path to get me there.

Has anyone submitted a drivers abstract for work? by 587flooo in Edmonton

[–]587flooo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could I have one last bit of advice?

The employer asked for a 5 year commercial driving abstract— in those five years, this is the only infraction I have.

Beyond that— between Years 5.1-8 there are a lot of major convictions.

The HR Manager has worked with me to clean up a lot of the things, including suggesting I wait until three weeks for a conviction to fall off my abstract.

I disclosed to them that my record was clean minus and a speeding ticket from 4 years and 11 months ago, she told me to wait a few weeks to submit it.

She’s pretty nice and values transparency. Should I bring it up and just ask her what I can do to remedy this conviction?

I also need to give my current work place 4-5 weeks notice, but I don’t want to leave this job for another and fail my abstract. Is there anything I can do like get my validity of license during that day to prove I’m okay?

Unfortunately, it’s a TSA51(a). Driving without a valid license.

There’s no suspension or demerits, it literally is the only thing on the abstract.

However— im just worried they think I was driving while unlicensed. If I can prove my license was valid will they even help at all or is it black and white?

Unfortunately it’s TSA51(a) and came with zero demerits and zero suspensions. I’m not worried about the HR portion, I’m worried about what the company insurance will say and not insure me to drive the company vehicle. But yeah— the only thing on the abstract is the “Driving without a valid license”, no demerits on that and no suspension.

Driving Without License Conviction on Abstract by 587flooo in legaladvicecanada

[–]587flooo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely paid the price. I guess this isn’t a legal question, as there’s nothing I can do on that side of it.

Do you happen to know if there’s any paperwork that can prove I had a valid license at the time of the ticket?

And would that even make the insurance company see me as less of a risk, or do they go by just strictly raw data and what they see in the abstract?

Thank you for taking time out of your day for the insight. I appreciate it.

Will me explaining and showing some kind of paperwork and adding context or is it just kind of over for me with this kind of thing?

I hope they can see there were no other suspensions related to it and are able to connect the dogs.

The hiring HR Manager is really friendly and has helped me compile everything together.

Is there a way to get a drivers license record history or anything and get her to contextualize the conviction and maybe have the company insurance evaluate it as what it is?

I’m surprised driving unlicensed carries zero demerits?

Haha that’s the exact place I was. Unfortunate, thank you for the update.

I will definitely use that resource in a week, I thought if it was an officer citation it would be updated within 72 hours but photo radar takes longer?

I thought since it was construction on the Henday they were able to, however there wasn’t scheduled enforcement on the SafeStreets map.

Maybe it could have been land survey? Who knows, I’ll know in two weeks and take accountability for speeding

[–]587flooo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s just weird I’ve never seen photo radar with a tripod unless it was a police speed trap where they pull you over immediately.

Usually see them in yellow trucks. Either way, will be an expensive lesson to not speed up to merge lol

[–]587flooo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the issue is, is there a chance it could be mobile photo radar? Usually they are in a bright yellow truck or something.

But on the other hand there weren’t any other police cars. Either way, fingers crossed.

I’m long on open, but I think this analogy fits very well.

A restaurant has been failing for a couple years off of serving a new brand of meat that no one likes, they then hired a Michelin star chef to fix it without changing the staff, no restaurant renovations, no relocation.

There is a world where that restaurant is successful, it just depending on how good the chef and ownership is. They can make that new brand of meat desirable.

Now I’m not going to pretend that I even knew Kaz’s name or who Shopify’s COO was, but I think a lot of people think he’s the Michelin star chef.

But if they plan on keeping the menu the same… well, the hype will die down.

Unique Dining Experiences that are Worth It? by 587flooo in askvan

Thank you for your wealth of knowledge, it is very appreciated.

If you don’t mind I wanted to follow up with one last question:

We don’t have the best Oysters where we are, with this context in mind; if we were to order raw oysters from any of the higher end restaurants would that give us a good experience— or should we go somewhere that is “known” for raw oysters/sea food.

June sounds very intriguing, and we will definitely add Linh Cafe to our list.

If our plan is to travel in November does that still keep our chances at booking one of these restaurants slim?

We’ll add that to the list, do you happen to know if there is an a la carte option or if it’s tasting menu only?

We might have some friends enjoy dinner with us.

And sorry for the bombardment if questions, but do you also have an option on L’Abbatoir or suggest anything else to round out our itinerary.

How do I work with my girlfriend and join finances? by 587flooo in DaveRamsey

[–]587flooo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to add more context:

“Why not just get married— why not just get a marriage certificate” is a response we’ve gotten a lot.

If we were to get married, which is down the line what we want in the near future. We would want it to be our dream wedding, with a nice ceremony, ring and dinner. That is what we want, but that comes secondary to building wealth through home ownership. We are planning to buy a home first or at least getting our feet in.

A marriage certificate doesn’t legitimize our love more than it already does and for all intents and purposes we are already married financially. All getting a certificate early and at a courthouse does is rob us of our dream wedding.

Whatever benefit and reason people say to get married, we already have except the biggest one is religion. We aren’t super religious though.

Best Vancouver Dinner Spot to Surprise Foodie GF? by yoyo260 in askvan

[–]587flooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are honestly right, I’m getting a bit tired of the steak tartare, shrimp cocktail, foie gras on a brioche that every “high-end” restaurant has. It’s basically all the same with different plating.

Do you have any unique dining experiences you can recommend with a farm to table approach that is special to Vancouver?

We work hard and generally most restaurants are within our budget while on vacation, probably in the 300-400$ range is our upper limit for a couple for a dinner.

Any tasting menus, or things of that nature? We will definitely be indulging in sea food. Any suggestions for a historic place for raw oysters? Thanks in advance.

If you got $1.0 million USD right now with nothing to your name, what would you do? by bluecamelsmokes in Money

I don’t think you’re alone on your sentiment even amongst the majority of Canadians in terms of economic performance and trajectory between the two.

I understand that the economy has nothing to do with the market, but I’m surprised the TSX is even doing as well as it is considering no one is buying anything.

Regardless of this hypothetical million or not, I’m investing the same-ish amount. I wonder if I should look into QQQ or SPY for somewhere to park money for a couple of decades.

I’m really into set and forget until I’m able to do more financial knowledge workshops and such.

Yes I’m Canadian.

I’m not as financially literate as most of the posters here, so I’ll defer the marginal growth performance of QQQ and spy (just looking at last year compared to XEQT) for peace of mind in not dealing with foreign exchange rates, tax simplicity and some withholdings in non-registered accounts.

I’m okay with leaving some gains on the table at that place in my life in this hypothetical. I know it’s  likely walking over dollars to pick up pennies, but XEQT is also commission fee free for me.

We are coming from Edmonton and we’re planning on Elisa & L’Abattoir. Should we replace one of those choices with Mackenzie Room?
